What is the role?

The Arborist is responsible for conducting tree inventories, health and risk assessments, and providing arboricultural expertise for infrastructure and development projects. The role involves evaluating the impacts of proposed developments on trees, preparing technical reports and tree preservation plans, supporting regulatory compliance, and advising on tree protection measures during construction. The Arborist also contributes to ecological field surveys, collaborates with multidisciplinary teams, municipalities, regulators, and Indigenous partners, and supports environmental management initiatives across Ontario.

In this role, your duties and responsibilities will include:

  • Conduct detailed tree inventories, assessments, and arboriculture surveys, including condition and risk assessments, and diagnose tree health issues using industry best practices.
  • Provide consulting support for construction and development projects, including tree protection measures, impact assessment, and compliance with applicable legislation, regulatory, and municipal by-laws.
  • Support risk management decisions related to public safety, infrastructure, and land-use activities.
  • Assess impacts to trees from proposed developments and infrastructure projects.
  • Prepare clear, well‑structured arborist reports and technical supporting documentation.
  • Develop Tree Preservation and Restoration Plans (or equivalent) in collaboration with the Geomatics Team.
  • Represent LEA in meetings with clients, municipalities, and project stakeholders and collaborate with internal and external project teams, regulators, and Indigenous partners.
  • Provide guidance on the implementation of tree protection measures in the field.
  • Support terrestrial ecology field survey programs, including vegetation community characterization, wildlife habitat assessments, and Species at Risk (SAR) screening.
  • Adhere to health and safety policies and report any unsafe conditions, incidents, or hazards to the supervisor.
  • Other duties and responsibilities within the scope of the Environmental Sector.

The qualifications you need:

  • Certified Arborist designation with the International Society of Arboriculture (ISA).
  • Undergraduate degree or diploma in a related discipline (e.g., Ecology, Biology, Forestry, Fish and Wildlife Technology, Geography, Landscape Architecture).
  • Demonstrated 3-5 years of experience in consulting arboriculture, including tree inventory, assessment, reporting, and impact analysis.
  • Working knowledge of Ontario regulatory frameworks, including the Species Conservation Act, 2005 (SCA), Migratory Birds Convention Act, 1994 (MBCA), and applicable municipal tree by-laws.
  • Experience supporting regulatory permit applications and approvals as it relates to tree protection.
  • ISA Tree Risk Assessment Qualification (TRAQ) is considered a strong asset.
  • Butternut Health Assessor Certification is considered a strong asset.
  • Experience conducting other vegetation and/or botanical inventory protocols is considered a strong asset.
  • Proficiency with data collection, GPS tools, and GIS platforms (e.g., Field Maps, Collector, Survey123) and experience supporting mapping and geospatial data management.
  • Comfortable working outdoors in a variety of weather conditions and terrain, including construction and active work sites.
  • Experience with invasive species identification and management is considered a strong asset.
  • Valid driver’s license.
