Full job description

Historic Newspapers (historic-newspapers.com) is part of Wonderbly and we are proud custodians of the world’s largest collection of privately owned original newspapers. This unique and comprehensive archive enables us to create a range of distinctive Newspaper Book products, offering meaningful and highly personalised gifts for birthdays, anniversaries and special dates.

We work with leading newspaper publishers across the UK and US to design and develop an unparalleled range of personalised newspaper gifts.

Since June 2025, Historic Newspapers and Wonderbly have been part of Penguin Random House. With our headquarters in London and additional offices in South West Scotland, we are driven by a shared mission to connect people with their passions through beautifully crafted books.

This is a senior creative position working closely with our Creative Director to shape how Historic Newspapers looks, feels, and connects with customers online. You'll partner with our Senior Copywriter and ecommerce agency to be the driving force behind our digital marketing campaigns and the ongoing creative expression of our brand across our website and channels.

Working closely with the wider creative team, you will guide and mentor junior designers, oversee output quality, and help elevate the overall standard of design across the business. You're not just an overseer - you're someone who rolls up their sleeves, brings ideas to the table, and isn't satisfied until the work feels genuinely great.

Responsibilities

  • Lead digital marketing campaigns - conceiving, directing, and overseeing creative across paid, social, email, and seasonal campaigns end-to-end in partnership with our marketing leadership.
  • Bring the brand to life on-site - owning the creative direction of visual merchandising on our website in partnership with our ecommerce agency, from homepage to product pages, ensuring everything is on-brand and conversion-aware.
  • Collaborate across the business - working with trading, marketing, and product teams to ensure creative output supports commercial goals without losing brand integrity.
  • Lead by example - Providing guidance and feedback to midweight and junior designers
  • Take our creative to the next level - Exploring and introducing new formats such as video and motion where appropriate
  • Get stuck into other creative missions - from brand moments and product launches to one-off briefs that don't fit a neat box, you're up for it.
  • Solid experience in a similar creative role, ideally senior, within an ecommerce or direct-to-consumer business. We want to be sure you understand the rhythm and workflow of an in-house team.
  • A strong track record of consistently conceptualising and producing digital marketing campaigns across social, paid, and email. Ideally we want to see examples of multiple campaigns for the same brand in your portfolio.
  • Fluency with digital design and brand application, particularly through video. You understand what works on small screens and are happy working with any and all design tools to get it done. Advanced knowledge of Adobe Creative Suite is a must. Experience with motion or video (eg After Effects) is highly desirable
  • Confident working both strategically and executionally. You can write a creative brief and then make it happen. Ability to lead projects and support more junior team member
  • Genuine enthusiasm for our brand. We want someone who is excited about the history of the press, the nostalgia of a front page, and the stories behind the headlines.
  • An interest in - ideally, a passion for - sport. Sports are our biggest and fastest growing book category and we want someone who instinctively knows what it means to a fan.

Historic Newspapers is part of the Wonderbly Group which in turn is fully owned by Penguin Random House. We believe our corporate structure gives us the best of both worlds - a fast growing startup like environment but with the wider support and benefits of being part of an established media business.

This role is semi remote with one day per week minimum required in our central London HQ that we share with Wonderbly. We offer a wide range of perks and benefits including free breakfast, monthly lunch and learns, training and development budgets and regular team events including bi-annual trips to West Scotland to visit our newspaper archives and connect with the whole team.

Benefits include:

  • £50,000 - £60,000k per annum dependent on experience
  • 25 days a year holiday allowance (excluding public holidays)
  • Real mental health support with Spill
  • Free breakfast and a fully stocked fridge in our London office
  • 5% pension contribution, with no cap on yours
  • Regular social events - theatre trips, beautiful sit down meals, Sports day, just to name a few
  • Quarterly all hands (with exceptional food, great company and a chance to reflect and plan).
  • £500 per year learning and development budget
  • Free books - and a lot of them!
