Full job description
The Archdiocese of Chicago, the third largest in the United States, serves more than 2.2 million Catholics in 216 parishes in Cook County and Lake County, a geographic area of 1,411 square miles. The Archdiocese, pastored by Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, has more than 13,000 employees in its systems and ministries, including Catholic Charities, the region's largest nonprofit social service agency. The Archdiocese also has one of the country's largest seminaries. The Archdiocese's 150+ elementary and secondary schools comprise one of the largest U.S. private school systems. Its schools have received 96 U.S. Department of Education Blue Ribbon Awards.
Are you called to share your faith and theological knowledge with the next generation of Catholic leaders? Do you have a gift for teaching and a passion for forming young adults in the richness of the Catholic intellectual tradition? If so, we invite you to apply for the role of Part-Time Campus Minister at Calvert House, the University of Chicago’s Newman Center, located in the heart of Hyde Park.
This candidate will be an ordained religious individual in good standing with the Archdiocese of Chicago.
This is a part-time position with a minimum commitment of 10 hours per week. This is a ministry position, and while hours are defined by the academic calendar, the spirit of the role calls for genuine availability to students. The expectation is not simply clock-in, clock-out service, but rather a real pastoral and intellectual presence within the Calvert House community. The schedule will be set in coordination with the Director to ensure a sustainable rhythm that honors both the needs of students and the personal life of the instructor.
Duties and Responsibilities
Teaching and Faith Formation
Teach weekly Bible study sessions, guiding students in close reading of Scripture within the Catholic tradition and in dialogue with the intellectual culture of the University.
Lead courses and sessions in the Order of Christian Initiation for Adults (OCIA) program, in collaboration with the Chaplain/Director, and Associate Director, accompanying inquirers and catechumens through the stages of initiation.
Develop syllabi, lesson plans, and course materials appropriate to a university context, integrating rigorous intellectual content with personal faith formation.
Adapt teaching methods to the diverse academic and spiritual backgrounds of University of Chicago students.
Small Faith Communities
Facilitate small faith communities, fostering peer-to-peer theological reflection, spiritual friendship, and discipleship among students.
Recruit, train, and support student leaders who may co-facilitate small group discussions.
Develop or adapt formational materials for small group use, in coordination with the Director.
Community Presence and Collaboration
Be present at Calvert House during scheduled programming and, as possible, at liturgical and community events.
Cooperate with the Associate Director of Campus Ministry and other Calvert House staff in the coordination of faith formation programming.
Network and collaborate with other campus ministry organizations at the University of Chicago.
Participate in student orientation events and major programming initiatives as requested.
Other duties as assigned by the Chaplain/Director.
Education
Bachelor’s Degree in Theology, Religious Studies, Scripture, Ministry, or a related field is strongly preferred.
Candidates with a Bachelor’s degree and substantial demonstrated experience in Catholic catechesis, OCIA leadership, or faith formation will also be considered.
Teaching experience at the high school level or above is strongly preferred.
Qualifications
Must be a practicing Catholic in good standing with the Church.
Committed to and demonstrating a thorough understanding, respect, and support of the Catholic Church’s teachings, mission, and values.
Familiarity with Catholic Scripture scholarship and the Lectionary tradition.
Knowledge of the OCIA process, the Rite of Christian Initiation, and the liturgical year.
Experience in adult faith formation, catechesis, or small group ministry.
Ability to communicate complex theological ideas accessibly to a highly educated secular audience.
Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build genuine relationships with students.
Ability to work collaboratively within a ministry team environment.
Proficiency with standard office technology (MS Word, email, calendar systems).
VIRTUS or comparable safe environment training, or willingness to complete prior to beginning work.
The Archdiocese of Chicago offers a comprehensive total rewards package to include competitive compensation and benefit programs. Information about our benefit programs is available here.
This position has an hourly range of - $20.56 - $29.81 per hour. An employee’s pay within the this range will be based on many factors including but not limited to relevant education, qualifications, experience, skills, geographic location, and organizational needs.
