People have asked me what experiences they should have to be a good product manager. There's no right answer but for me the experiences that have made me a good product manager are not getting an MBA (don't have one) or founding a company (haven't done that). Instead, what's made me a good product manager are: 1) Getting a masters in computer science having taken no math or computer science classes in college. 2) Having to ride 11 miles on a broken hand after getting in a bike crash on the way to work. 3) Living in four foreign countries. 4) Developing a deep love for donuts that allows me to out-eat people twice my size. As a product manager, I know how to learn quickly, to take calculated risks and deal with the consequences, to see the world through others' eyes, and to have fun.
