Traveling HDPE Fusion Technician
Xylem is seeking a Traveling HDPE Fusion Technician to support industrial construction projects throughout the Southeastern United States, with the potential to travel anywhere in the U.S. This is a full-time, travel-intensive role responsible for performing HDPE pipe fusion on large-scale industrial projects while ensuring equipment is operating safely and efficiently.
The primary service territory includes Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, and Washington, D.C. Candidates located in North Carolina or South Carolina are preferred due to the central location within the territory.
What Your Day Will Look Like as a Traveling HDPE Fusion Technician
As a Traveling HDPE Fusion Technician, you will spend the majority of your time performing heat fusion of high-density polyethylene (HDPE) piping systems on customer job sites. Approximately 95% of the role is dedicated to HDPE pipe fusion, supporting industrial construction, infrastructure, and utility projects.
In this role, you will:
- Perform HDPE pipe fusion using McElroy fusion equipment in accordance with industry standards and manufacturer specifications.
- Support large-scale pipe installation, site setup, and decommissioning projects at customer locations.
- Conduct basic preventive maintenance and minor mechanical repairs on fusion equipment to ensure reliable operation.
- Troubleshoot equipment issues and coordinate repairs as needed.
- Safely operate and maintain company-provided fusion equipment, service vehicle, trailer, and specialty tools.
- Ensure all work is completed safely while following company policies and customer site requirements.
- Build strong relationships with customers by providing professional service and technical expertise on every project.
- Maintain accurate documentation of work performed and communicate project updates with internal teams.
Customers include leading equipment rental companies, waterworks distributors, HDPE contractors, and large industrial construction organizations.
Travel & Schedule
This is a travel-heavy position with scheduling driven by customer project needs.
- Primary territory includes FL, GA, NC, SC, VA, and DC, with occasional travel throughout the U.S.
- Typical projects last 2-3 months but vary based on customer requirements.
- Work schedules may include Monday-Friday assignments or extended schedules, including weekends, depending on project demands.
- Projects generally continue until completion.
Xylem is committed to supporting work-life balance whenever possible. During longer-term projects, technicians may be flown home for extended weekends when project schedules allow.
Equipment & Travel Support
Xylem provides the equipment and resources needed for success, including:
- Company take-home service vehicle
- Company trailer
- Assigned HDPE fusion machine
- Company-provided specialty tools (replaced if damaged during normal use)
- Company credit card for business travel expenses
- Company-paid travel accommodations
- $150 per day meal per diem
Employees are expected to provide their own basic hand tools.

Position Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Current National HDPE Fusion Certification (required)
- Valid driver's license with a clean driving record
- Ability to obtain required customer clearances (TWIC, DISA, etc.) as needed
- Ability to obtain a DOT Medical Card
- Completion of required driver qualification documentation, including MVR, FMCSA, and DOT compliance requirements
- Willingness and ability to travel extensively based on business needsPreferred Skills & Experience
- Hands-on experience performing HDPE pipe fusion in industrial or construction environments
- Experience operating McElroy fusion equipment preferred
- Strong mechanical aptitude
- Basic diesel engine knowledge
- Experience performing preventive maintenance and minor mechanical repairs on equipment
- Ability to troubleshoot mechanical equipment in the field
- Strong communication and customer service skills
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
- Commitment to workplace safety and quality workmanship
- Ability to adapt to changing project schedules and customer needs
