Williams College is now accepting applications for a Lead Custodian to join the Custodial Services team! 

This is a full-time (40 hours per week), year-round position, reporting to the Custodial Services Manager.  As Lead Custodian, you will help us operate and maintain a safe, beautiful, and sustainable environment for living and learning at Williams. Responsibilities:

  • Direct up to 12 staff members in the day-to-day custodial operations of all campus buildings. Manage time off requests, monitor overtime, enter work orders, perform building inspections, and report problems.
  • Perform general cleaning throughout designated areas on campus, hard and resilient floor care, and operate vacuum cleaners, floor machines, and buffers.
  • Carry out light maintenance work, snow shoveling/snow blower operation in the winter, and bed making during the summer conference season.
  • Establish and maintain a positive, cooperative working relationship with faculty, staff, and students. 
  • Maintain a functional awareness of typical workplace hazards, ensuring the proper and safe use of chemicals and equipment.
  • Other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

  • Ability to work effectively within a team environment and interact professionally with faculty, fellow staff members, and students.
  • Demonstrated good customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently without close supervision, keep well-organized, and prioritize work effectively.
  • Basic knowledge of computers to manage work orders and operational requests.
  • Ability to comply with standing instructions provided by operating manuals, safety data sheets, and safety regulations for personal protection regarding equipment and chemical usage.
  • Ability to lift and carry heavy objects up to 50 pounds independently and up to 75 pounds with assistance, stand for prolonged periods of time, and work on ladders.
  • Ability to utilize wearable equipment and operate cleaning/sanitizing dispensing units.
  • Must have the flexibility to work hours dictated by departmental needs, which may include evenings, nights, weekends, holidays, and peak activity periods.
  • Experience in general cleaning, maintenance, carpet, and floor care is highly preferred.

Schedule:  Monday through Friday from 5:30am to 2:00pm

Schedules are subject to change based on the needs of the department. Overtime, weekends, and holidays may be required as needed. 

This position is eligible for premium pay, including overtime and applicable shift differentials, for work performed during holidays, weekends, emergency snow response, and other qualifying shifts.

Pay ranges from $24.50-$28.00 per hour, commensurate with experience.
