Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)
Position Summary
Under the direct supervision of the Resident Care Manager or their designee, the Certified Medical Assistant (CMA) provides compassionate, person-centered care to residents in a senior living community. This position supports residents with activities of daily living, medication assistance, personal care, and other services that promote independence, dignity, safety, and overall well-being.
Key Responsibilities
Resident Care and Daily Living Support
Assist residents with activities of daily living according to their individualized plans of care.
Support personal hygiene needs, including bathing, showering, grooming, and oral or denture care.
Assist residents with selecting appropriate clothing and getting dressed.
Provide incontinence and other elimination-related care.
Assist residents with safe transfers and ambulation.
Provide limited nursing-related care within the position’s authorized scope.
Help with resident admissions, transfers, and discharges.
Medication Assistance
Assist residents with medication administration in accordance with state regulations, organizational policies, and established procedures.
Place oral medication in a resident’s hand or another appropriate container when assistance is requested.
Apply topical medications as authorized.
Assist with prescribed EpiPens according to established protocols.
Follow proper medication procedures, including
Reading prescription labels and understanding common abbreviations.
Providing the correct medication at the correct time.
Recognizing and reporting potential side effects or adverse reactions.
Following infection-control procedures.
Properly storing and disposing of medications.
Accurately documenting medication assistance.
Taking appropriate action when concerns arise regarding a resident’s ability to self-administer medication.
Understanding common medication classifications and their typical side effects.
Documentation and Communication
Maintain accurate records of residents’ fluid intake, output, and nutritional information.
Complete daily charting and other required documentation.
Give and receive reports regarding assigned residents during shift changes.
Participate in resident care planning as requested.
Answer telephones and provide other administrative support as needed.
Promptly communicate changes in a resident’s condition or behavior to the appropriate supervisor.
Housekeeping, Laundry, and Dining Support
Assist with light housekeeping and laundry duties.
Help maintain the general cleanliness and organization of community areas, offices, and resident rooms.
Make beds, spot-clean areas, and restock resident-room supplies.
Prepare and deliver meals to residents.
Assist dining room staff with meal service as needed.
Resident and Family Support
Provide emotional support to residents and their families.
Develop positive, respectful relationships with residents and family members.
Communicate effectively by speaking and listening in a compassionate and supportive manner.
Help address resident concerns and communicate unresolved concerns to the appropriate team member.
Respect and advocate for residents’ rights, preferences, privacy, and dignity.
Activities and Engagement
Support the delivery of resident activities under the direction of the Activities Coordinator or Resident Care Manager.
Encourage residents to participate in activities appropriate to their interests and abilities.
Provide feedback regarding residents’ needs, interests, and capabilities.
Help facilitate scheduled activities, including exercise classes.
Remind residents of appointments and scheduled activities.
Safety, Compliance, and Professional Standards
Follow Wesley Woods’ standards of conduct and expectations for professional behavior.
Attend all required meetings, courses, and training sessions.
Protect the confidentiality of residents and families, including verbal, written, and electronic information.
Complete required annual employee health assessments.
Follow bloodborne pathogen, hazardous-material management, infection-control, and body-substance isolation procedures.
Maintain acceptable attendance and punctuality.
Maintain current knowledge of resident-care procedures, including:
Handwashing and infection prevention.
Measuring and documenting vital signs.
Proper use of gait belts and scales.
Safe body mechanics.
Transfer and ambulation techniques.
Perform other duties required by state regulations or assigned by the Resident Care Manager.
Note: Based on the medication-related responsibilities, you may want to confirm whether the intended title is Certified Medication Aide (CMA) rather than Certified Medical Assistant.
QualificationsMinimum Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Certification by the State of Georgia as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA).
The ability to read, write and follow written/oral instructions in English.
Experience in a retirement community preferred.
Current CPR and/or First Aid will be required.
Ability to lift up to fifty pounds, bend, stoop, and twist. Ability to stand and walk 90% of working hours.
