About this role

We are seeking a Director - Business Development to join our Grid Services team! As a Director - Business Development, you are responsible for leading strategic growth initiatives across the renewables, IPP, and oil & gas markets. 

As a Director - Business Development, you will develop and execute business development strategies that expand market share, strengthen customer and supplier relationships, and advance the company’s position in high-growth energy and infrastructure markets. You will identify and qualify new opportunities, build executive-level relationships with customers, developers, EPCs, suppliers, and other strategic partners, and collaborate cross-functionally to deliver solutions aligned with company objectives. The ideal candidate brings deep industry knowledge, strong commercial acumen, and a proven ability to convert market opportunities into sustainable, profitable growth.

Responsibilities:

  • Develops and executes business development strategies focused on renewables, IPP, and oil & gas markets by identifying, evaluating, and advancing new opportunities with developers, IPPs, EPCs, utilities, industrial customers, suppliers, and other key market participants.
  • Builds and maintains senior-level relationships with existing and prospective customers, suppliers, and strategic partners to uncover needs, shape solutions, and position the company as a trusted advisor.
  • Leads market analysis, account planning, and opportunity qualification to identify growth areas, competitive dynamics, customer requirements, and emerging trends across the energy sector.
  • Partners with sales, operations, supply chain, finance, legal, engineering, and other internal stakeholders to develop customer solutions, commercial strategies, proposals, and execution plans.
  • Represents the company in negotiations involving strategic partnerships, supplier relationships, project opportunities, new service offerings, and market-entry initiatives.
  • Monitors pipeline performance, market activity, and business development metrics; reports progress to senior leadership and adjusts strategies to improve results.
  • Serves as an external ambassador for the company at industry events, customer meetings, trade associations, conferences, and other market-facing forums.
  • Selects, manages, coaches, evaluates, and develops team members, as applicable, to build a high-performing business development function.
  • Analyzes business development performance, market intelligence, customer feedback, and opportunity data to inform senior leadership and continuously refine growth strategies.

Qualifications:

  • High School Degree or Equivalent required
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • 5 years experience directly related to the renewables, IPP, and oil & gas markets
  • 10 years financial analysis, sales and negotiation experience.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Strong business analysis and financial modeling skills.
  • Knowledge of industry including suppliers, customers, and competitors preferred.
  • Knowledge of WESCO’s existing business lines, strengths and challenges preferred.
  • Ability to spot new business opportunities and quickly evaluate opportunities preferred.
  • Ability to initiate and develop relationships with key decision makers both inside and outside company preferred.
  • Ability to analyze financial and operational data, statements and projections preferred.
  • Ability to identify and cultivate external resources preferred.
  • Ability to accurately recognize when additional company resources are being requested preferred.
  • Ability to travel 50% - 75%

This amount is what we reasonably believe we will pay for the position; however, offer amounts may vary based on factors such as geographic location, relevant education, experience, qualifications, skills, shift, or any collective bargaining agreements.

For eligible positions, compensation may include participation in a bonus or sales incentive plan, subject to the terms and conditions of the applicable plan documents. For certain sales roles, Wesco also offers a commission structure that provides additional compensation based on sales results, as defined by the applicable commission plan.
