Wellcome Collection is a free museum and library. We believe everyone’s experience of health matters. Through our collections, exhibitions and events, in books and online, we explore the past, present and future of health.

Wellcome Collection opened in 2007 and currently welcomes around 400k visitors per year, with over 4m online visits. We care for many thousands of items relating to health, medicine and human experience, including rare books, artworks, films and videos, personal archives and objects. We’re part of Wellcome, a charitable foundation supporting science to help build a healthier future for everyone.

We are looking for a Digital Editor to join our team for 1 year to cover maternity leave.

Where in Wellcome will I be working?

The Digital Editorial team looks after the content on Wellcome Collection’s website. We publish stories that explore human health through a wide variety of lived experiences. We also look after the website content that helps everyone from visitors to researchers discover and use our venue. We’re part of the digital team, in the Collections and Digital Directorate at Wellcome Collection.

What will I be doing?

You will be a key member of the Digital Editorial team, ensuring the regular publication and delivery of digital content. You will attract and develop new audiences and deepen engagement with existing audiences through our website by commissioning and editing exciting new stories about our collections, live programme and themes.

As a Digital Editor you will:

  • Research, plan and write editorial content, including articles, image galleries, photo essays, interviews and other forms.

  • Commission and edit writers.

  • Develop and maintain a community of contacts inside and outside the organisation to research, commission and coordinate new content.

  • Write and manage the production of functional site content; support colleagues in producing and maintaining content related to the breadth of our work.

  • Contribute to our constantly evolving editorial strategy to reach new and diverse audiences.

  • Copyedit website content.

Is this job for me?

We are looking for someone with experience in commissioning and editing content, and the ability to generate and assess ideas and translate them into deliverable content. You should have a curiosity about the past, present and future of health, and be familiar with the basics of digital content strategy and design, as well as collaborative practices like pair-writing.

Minimum Criteria:

  • Proven track record of producing engaging, accurate content for diverse audiences and translating ideas into deliverable outputs.

  • Strong ability to generate and evaluate ideas, make and articulate sound editorial decisions, and work effectively within an editorial team.

  • Excellent organisational skills, with the ability to plan content schedules across short- and long-term timeframes and consistently meet deadlines.

  • Highly literate with excellent written, oral and presentation skills, strong interpersonal abilities, and experience interviewing and engaging with domain experts.
