The Compact Equipment Specialist (CES) is a retail store-based, customer-facing equipment sales role located at a singular Cat Compact store. This position is responsible for greeting customers as they enter the store, engaging customers on the equipment lot, understanding their equipment needs, demonstrating equipment and attachments, and guiding customers through the buying, rental, financing, technology onboarding, and ownership process.

The CES serves as the face of the Cat Compact location and is often the first point of contact for walk-in customers, lot traffic, phone inquiries, web leads, rental customers, and referral opportunities. This role is not designed as a traditional outside sales territory position. The primary focus is creating an Easy. Engaged. Exceptional. retail experience that converts store traffic and inbound interest into compact equipment sales, rentals, and long-term customer relationships.

WHAT YOU'LL DO:

Retail Sales & Customer Engagement

  • Greet and engage customers who enter the store, visit the equipment lot, call the location, or submit digital inquiries.
  • Serve as the primary sales resource for walk-in traffic, inbound leads, rental customers, referral opportunities, and local prospects tied to the store.
  • Meet customers at the door, in the showroom, or on the lot and create a professional, approachable retail buying experience.
  • Conduct equipment walk-arounds, product demonstrations, attachment presentations, and feature comparisons.
  • Help customers evaluate equipment options, attachments, technology features, financing alternatives, warranty options, service programs, and total ownership costs.
  • Convert walk-in traffic, lot visits, phone inquiries, web leads, marketing leads, and rental customers into equipment sales opportunities.
  • Prepare quotations, proposals, and sales presentations for compact equipment, attachments, allied products, and related solutions.
  • Follow up on customer inquiries, quotes, demonstrations, and open opportunities with urgency and discipline.
  • Drive adoption and customer onboarding of Caterpillar technology platforms, telematics solutions, digital services, and customer portals to improve ownership experience and customer engagement.

Customer Support & Store Experience

  • Deliver a best-in-class customer experience by coordinating support across sales, rental, parts, service, technology, financing, and product support teams.
  • Resolve customer concerns or coordinate internal resources for timely resolution.
  • Educate customers on financing, warranties, maintenance programs, safety features, Caterpillar technology platforms, and ownership support solutions.
  • Take an active role in assisting with retail merchandising, showroom presentation, equipment lot organization, signage, promotional displays, and customer experience initiatives.
  • Support local store promotions, open houses, customer appreciation events, marketing campaigns, and community engagement activities.
  • Partner with store leadership to improve customer flow, store traffic, lead conversion, retail presentation, and overall Cat Compact customer experience.

Product Knowledge & Equipment Applications

  • Maintain expert knowledge of Caterpillar compact equipment, attachments, rental solutions, allied products, competitive offerings, and related customer applications.
  • Stay current on industry trends, product developments, local market conditions, and compact equipment customer needs.
  • Understand and communicate equipment safety features, operator-assist technologies, jobsite safety benefits, and safe operating practices to customers.
  • Provide application recommendations that improve customer productivity, safety, utilization, and profitability.
  • Promote Caterpillar technology solutions that improve equipment performance, utilization, maintenance visibility, and customer engagement.

Store-Based Lead Management

  • Manage customer information, activities, quotes, opportunities, and follow-up tasks within CRM.
  • Maintain disciplined follow-up with store traffic, inbound leads, rental customers, marketing-generated leads, and digital inquiries.
  • Track competitive activity and local market intelligence that impacts the store and nearby customer base.
  • Collaborate with store leadership to identify local growth opportunities, retail process improvements, and customer experience enhancements.

Cross-Functional Collaboration

  • Work closely with Sales, Rental, Parts, Service, Product Support, Credit, Marketing, Technology, and Operations teams.
  • Coordinate equipment availability, deliveries, financing requirements, rental transitions, product support needs, and customer onboarding activities.
  • Assist with store initiatives designed to increase traffic, improve conversion, grow customer retention, and strengthen the Cat Compact brand.
  • Support company initiatives focused on safety, operational excellence, customer loyalty, and a consistent Warren CAT retail experience.

 

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:

Education

  • High School Diploma or GED required.

Experience

  • Minimum two (2) years of experience in equipment sales, retail sales, rental operations, construction, agricultural, industrial sales, or related industry.

Skills & Abilities

  • Strong customer greeting, retail engagement, interpersonal, and relationship-building skills.
  • Excellent verbal, written, and presentation skills.
  • Ability to create a welcoming customer experience in the store, showroom, and equipment lot.
  • Proven ability to convert customer traffic, inbound inquiries, and rental activity into sales opportunities.
  • Ability to operate independently while supporting a singular store location and its assigned local market.
  • Strong organizational, follow-up, and time-management skills.
  • Ability to analyze customer needs and recommend practical equipment, rental, technology, financing, and product support solutions.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and CRM systems.

Licenses

  • Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.

Preferred Qualification

  • Bachelor's Degree in Business, Marketing, Construction Management, Engineering, or related field.
  • Experience with Caterpillar products and dealer operations.
  • Experience in compact construction equipment sales, retail equipment sales, or rental operations.
  • Knowledge of equipment financing, leasing, warranty programs, and service support programs.
  • Understanding of construction, landscaping, agriculture, utility, municipal, and small contractor markets.
  • Familiarity with Caterpillar technology platforms, telematics, customer portals, and equipment connectivity solutions.

Core Role Expectation

This is a retail sales position operating from a singular Cat Compact store location. The Compact Equipment Specialist is expected to spend the majority of time engaging customers in the store, on the equipment lot, through inbound sales channels, and during local store activities rather than operating as a traditional outside sales representative assigned to a broad geographic territory. Success is measured by customer experience, conversion of store traffic into equipment sales, technology adoption, store presentation, customer retention, and overall store growth.
