What You'll Be Doing

If so, the Physical Plant division of Wake County General Services is looking for applicants that are skilled in these areas to fulfill our 1st shift General Trades Technician role and would love to meet you! 

Key Responsibilities:

  • Repair, replace, upgrade, and maintain Wake County Facility fixtures and finishes.
  • Plan and organize work or requests for services which could include building maintenance, renovation projects, and project proposal work
  • Inventory supplies and monitor equipment operations and usage
  • Determine equipment and supplies to be used in fabrication or repair
  • Coordinate work orders and supervise work projects and planning as well as inspect sites for compliance and completion
  • Conduct system audits, prepare reports and manage programs
  • Evaluate processes and programs and recommend procedure changes
  • Schedule and implement repairs and supervise contractors
  • Respond to emergencies and natural disasters
  • Participate in the Physical Plant Safety Committee and work with the Safety Officer to maintain a safe working environment


About Our Team

General Services Administration (GSA) manages Wake County owned and leased facilities, the Wake County fleet, provides criminal justice support, and supports a number of General Government business units. GSA is dedicated to ensuring safe, productive work environments; safe, reliable vehicles; and consistent corporate support to assigned business units. The department is organized into six major organizational service delivery divisions: (1) Administration, (2) Central Services, (3) Field Services, (4) Fleet Services, (5) Physical Plant and (6) Security and Safety Services. These service organizations support the four core businesses of GSA: facility management, fleet management, general government and criminal justice support.

The Basics (Required Education and Experience)

  • High school diploma or GED
  • One year of experience in general trades maintenance
  • A valid driver's license and a "safe" driving record required.
  • Equivalent education and experience are accepted

Beyond the Basics (Preferred Education and Experience)

  • Experience with custom design, build and installation of commercial/residential millwork, cabinetry, countertops, displays, and custom woodwork
  • Three plus years of experience in commercial/residential millwork design, fabrication and installation
  • Experience in lamination/solid surface fabrication and installation

How Will We Know You're 'The One'?

  • Knowledge of commercial building roof and building envelope systems
  • Experience reading blueprints, work orders, and various schematics
  • Knowledge of relevant building codes and regulations
  • Works cooperatively with other trades staff
  • Proven problem-solving and decision-making skills
  • Effective verbal and listening communication skills
  • Experience working from ladders and motorized lifts
  • Experience working on roofs and elevated structures
  • Experience operating forklifts and pallet jacks
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
  • Works effectively with limited supervision
  • Effective time management skills

Employment Type: Regular

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday 7:00 am -4:00 pm

Hiring Range: 26.44-30.84 hourly

Market Range: 26.44 - 35.23
