Sustainability Specialist

SUMMARY/JOB SCOPE: 

We are seeking a highly motivated and knowledgeable Sustainability Specialist to join our corporate sustainability team. This role requires a unique blend of sustainability and industry knowledge to support the company’s sustainability and product marketing initiatives. You will be part of development and execution of the company’s marketing strategies that showcase the company’s sustainable initiatives, products and achievements. 

 KEY RESPONSIBILITIES: 

 Life Cycle Assessment and Environmental Product Declarations: 

• Ensure that VCNA’s approach to Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) and Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) is aligned with industry best practice and regulatory requirements within our chosen markets. 

• Develop and execute standard processes to collect data on raw materials, energy consumption, transportation, and end-of-life recycling to complete the LCA for the company’s products. 

• Draft and publish EPDs following specific Product Category Rules (PCRs) and industry standards (e.g., ISO 14044, EN 15804). 

• Collaborate with external verifiers and program operators to ensure the data is accurate and verifiable. 

• Keep up to date on developments around LCA and EPD standards, PCRs and practices, identify improvements for the company. 

 Sustainable Products Marketing: 

• Support and collaborate with the sales and sustainability teams to develop product marketing strategies that highlight reduced carbon emissions, optimized resource usage, and eco-friendly technologies. 

• Be a supporting member in executing the sustainable products marketing strategy aligned with the company's overall goals. 

• Create content, including technical articles, studies and presentations, showcasing the company’s sustainable cement, concrete and construction aggregate production and practices and broader sustainability developments in the Built Environment sector. 

• Work closely with the communications team to develop visually engaging materials that communicate the technical and environmental aspects of the company’s products for a variety of stakeholders. This includes customers and others in the downstream value chain. 

• Engage with internal cement, concrete and aggregate (sales and technical service teams) and external stakeholders, including customers, partners, and industry organizations, to promote the company's sustainable products. 

 Sustainability Support: 

• Monitor and report on key sustainability metrics, ensuring alignment with corporate sustainability targets. 

• Assist in the development and execution of sustainability communication strategies to engage employees, customers, and the public in the company’s sustainability efforts. 

• Assist in developing training and awareness programs to educate employees on sustainability best practices. 

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE:   

• Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Environmental Science, Civil Engineering or a related field. 

• Some experience in LCA/EPDs within the cement or construction materials industry. 

• Knowledge of cement chemistry, manufacturing processes, and sustainability practices in the cement industry would be an asset. 

• Some experience in concrete mix designs and aggregate optimization and construction testing would be useful.

• LEED AP designation preferred or a willingness to obtain certification. 

• ACI Concrete Field-Testing Technician Grade 1 

•  Advanced knowledge of MS Office is required.  

• Knowledge of SAP systems is a definite asset. 

• Knowledge of Concrete and Cement LCA software tools
