Position Summary
Organ Recovery Specialist- Surgical Technologist
The Organ Recovery Specialist is responsible for coordinating, assisting, and performing critical aspects of the surgical recovery process for organ donation. This role partners closely with hospital operating room staff, transplant centers, and donation professionals to facilitate successful organ recovery, preservation, and transportation while ensuring compliance with all regulatory requirements.
As an Organ Recovery Specialist, you'll play a vital role in helping save and enhance lives through the gift of organ donation. Every case provides an opportunity to support donor families, transplant recipients, healthcare partners, and the mission of improving health outcomes throughout our communities.
What You'll Do:
- Serve as the primary point of contact for operating room staff during donor cases, providing updates, coordination, and support throughout the recovery process.
- Assist operating room teams with donor case preparation and organ recovery procedures.
- Coordinate surgical recovery activities and maintain positive working relationships with hospital and transplant center partners.
- Perform intra-operative organ preservation and kidney perfusion procedures.
- Secure placement of consented organs that are not suitable for transplant for research and education purposes.
- Coordinate transportation and logistics for recovered organs and tissues to transplant centers and research facilities.
- Ensure all organs, tissues, specimens, and required documentation are packaged and transported in accordance with OPTN policies and regulatory standards.
- Assist with post-mortem care and support operating room staff as needed.
- Complete organ recovery documentation accurately and thoroughly.
What You Need:
- Associate's Degree or Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university in a related healthcare field required.
- 1+ years of operating room and/or patient care experience required.
- Experience as a Surgical Technician, Surgical Assistant, Circulating Nurse, or in a similar clinical role strongly preferred.
- Familiarity with aseptic technique and sterile field practices.
- Ability to safely handle surgical instruments, organs, and tissues.
- Knowledge of medical terminology, disease processes, medications, and human anatomy.
- Valid Wisconsin Driver's License and access to reliable transportation required.

Responsibilities

- Serves as the primary contact person for operating room during donor cases, gives notification to operating room (OR) staff of pending cases, is available to respond to questions/concerns from the OR staff
- Assists OR staff as needed with preparation for organ recovery
- Establishes and maintains positive working relationships with hospital and transplant center staff
- Secures placement of all consented non-transplantable organs for research; independently recovers organs for research/education
- Performs intra-operative organ preservation, and organ perfusion for kidneys
- Coordinates transportation of recovered organs and tissues to recipient transplant centers or research facilities
- Ensures all recovered organs and tissues are packaged with appropriate paperwork, blood, and tissue specimens per OPTN policy
- Assists OR staff with post-mortem care
- Completes all organ recovery and preservation related documentation accurately
- Maintains organ recovery and preservation equipment and supply inventory
- Maintains quality assurance and equipment maintenance records, actively participates in Lean and continuous improvement activities, Meets regulatory guidelines and requirements for data reporting of donor information
- Assists Hospital Relations Liaison with educating health care professionals and the public regarding organ donation; may develop, conduct, and participate in education programs for health care professionals and the public.
- Supports and demonstrates a customer service commitment to internal and external customers through adherence to Versiti customer service standards and processes
- Understands how applicable laws, regulations, standards, policies and procedures impact specific job responsibilities and functions and performs assigned job functions in accordance with them to include those set forth by the AOPO (Association of Organ Procurement Organizations), CMS, HRSA and the OPTN.
- Performs other duties as required or assigned which are reasonably within the scope of the duties in this job classification
- Understands and performs in accordance with all applicable regulatory and compliance requirements

Qualifications
Education
- Associate's Degree or Bachelor’s Degree from an accredited college or university in a related healthcare field required
Experience
- 1-3 years of operating room and/or patient care experience as a Surgical Technician, Surgical Assistant, Circulating Nurse or similar position required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Familiarity with aseptic technique and sterile fields required
- Ability to handle surgical instruments and organs/tissues safely required
- Ability to communicate and collaborate with others in challenging and stressful situations as well as conflict resolution skills required
- Good organizational skills with the ability to prioritize and handle multiple tasks at one time while maintaining attention to detail required
- Ability to work independently as well as in a team environment required
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills with a professional and courteous demeanor, Knowledge of basic medical terminology, medications, disease processes and human anatomy required
- Ability to use a personal computer, Microsoft Office and the internet for data entry and retrieval of information required
- Valid Wisconsin Driver’s License and access to a vehicle required
Licenses and Certifications
- American Board for Transplant Certification (ABTC) certification as a Certified Transplant Preservationist (CTP) required within two years of hire preferred
