 Who You Are:

The Assistant Chief Building Engineer is a hands-on facility operations professional who helps lead the safe, reliable, and efficient operation of a USPS facility and its surrounding grounds. This role supports the Chief Building Engineer in overseeing preventive maintenance, corrective repairs, work planning, supplier performance, and regulatory compliance across critical building systems. The ideal candidate brings strong technical knowledge of facility maintenance and building operations, sound judgment in resolving day-to-day issues, and the ability to step into a leadership support role to help ensure uninterrupted operations, service excellence, and contract compliance.

 What You’ll Do:

  • Work full-time on-site during normal working hours and support daily facility engineering operations and maintenance activities.
  • Serve as the designated backup to the Chief Building Engineer and cover the Chief’s leave time as scheduled.
  • Respond to facility issues by phone or on-site, as needed, to support continuity of operations.
  • Support reporting to the Facility Manager and USPS COR regarding facility operations, maintenance status, and critical issues.
  • Ensure compliance with USPS guidelines related to insecticides, chemicals, and hazardous materials.
  • Assist in supervising and directing services required to operate and maintain the facility and grounds in accordance with Addendum requirements.
  • Assist in creating and maintaining detailed work plans that support Addendum requirements and facility maintenance objectives.
  • Maintain accurate logs of maintenance deficiencies, issues, and operational concerns.
  • Maintain files and correspondence related to services performed by suppliers and sub-suppliers.
  • Assist with submitting monthly and additional reports, participating in USPS work plan discussions, and preparing project recommendations with supporting documentation. 

What You’ll Bring: 

  • High school diploma or GED required; associate degree or technical/vocational training in building engineering, facilities maintenance, mechanical systems, HVAC, electrical systems, or a related field preferred.
  • Five or more years of progressively responsible experience supporting building operations, maintenance, and repair activities in a commercial, industrial, institutional, or government facility environment.
  • Experience assisting with oversight of preventive maintenance and corrective repair programs for HVAC, electrical, plumbing, mechanical, and other critical building systems.
  • Demonstrated ability to coordinate daily maintenance activities, support supplier and sub-supplier performance, maintain service records, and help ensure contract and work plan requirements are met.
  • Working knowledge of applicable facility safety practices, building codes, and compliance requirements, including handling procedures for chemicals, insecticides, and hazardous materials.
  • Ability to read and interpret maintenance documentation, operating procedures, equipment manuals, and facility-related reports to support troubleshooting and operational decision-making.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to prepare reports, document deficiencies, discuss work plans, and communicate effectively with facility leadership, suppliers, and USPS stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to respond effectively to facility issues and support continuity of operations in a fast-paced environment, including assuming backup responsibilities during the Chief Building Engineer’s scheduled absences.
  • Relevant certifications such as EPA Section 608, HVAC, boiler, electrical, or other building systems credentials are preferred, if applicable to the facility or jurisdiction.

 Compensation 

 Expected Salary: $65,000 - $70,000
