Under the Supervision and direction of the Lead Welder, the Welder IV lays out, fabricates, repairs and joins metals and other materials and parts including plates, bulkheads, and frames bracing them in position with the hull of a ship by applying appropriate welding techniques.

 


Responsibilities

This position description is subject to change at any time as needed to meet the requirements of the program or company.

  • Apply appropriate fabrication and welding process to fabricate, repair, join, and repair parts composed of stainless steel, aluminum, and carbon steel or other materials;
  • Position pieces to be welded into jigs, holding fixtures, guides, and steps using measuring instruments and hand tools;
  • Weld components using manual or semi-automatic welding equipment in various positions (vertical, horizontal or overhead)
  • Lay-out and mark points on parts or subassemblies using rule, square, scribe or templates;
  • Fabricate and weld all parts requiring repair on an aluminum hulled, 75' Catamaran;
  • Mig/Tig aluminum welding;
  • Test and inspect completed work for conformance to specifications;
  • Perform Non-destructive testing (NDT)
  • Perform work in accordance with established safety procedures;
  • Participate in special projects as required.
  • Complete projects using blueprints, technical manuals, drawings and sketches;
  • Assist in determining parts, supplies, and material requirements to complete required projects.
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Minimum Qualifications: Education/Certifications: One year related experience may be substituted for one year of education, if degree is required.
    • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Certifications:
    • Preferred certified welder with Mig/Tig Aluminum welding experience
    • Possess a valid driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
  • Experience:
    • (5) years’ experience as a journeyman welder;
    • Knowledge of welding tools and procedures as well as knowledge of geometry, weld shrinkage, welding techniques, and the physical properties of metal;
  • Skills
    • Excellent oral and basic English writing skills.
    • Knowledge of Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and storage requirements to meet compatibility of products based on hazard class is required.
    • Strong interpersonal skills are required.
    • Ability to exercise discretion and good judgement is required.
    • Ability to prioritized responsibilities to handle a demanding workload is required.
    • Attention to detail with a high degree of accuracy is required.
    • Additional knowledge/skill requirements may be required by assignment or contract.
  • Working Conditions:
    • Must be capable of working in an extreme weather conditions with temperatures exceeding 85 degrees Fahrenheit.
    • Indoor and/or outdoor environment with very adverse and harsh conditions (i.e., hot, wet, tropical environment with average temperatures of 85 degrees in the summer months).
    • Includes some industrial production environment conditions as well.
    • The worker is subject to both environmental conditions. Activities occur inside and outside.
    • The worker is subject to noise. There is sufficient noise to cause the worker to shout in order to be heard about ambient noise level.
    • The worker is subject to hazards. Includes a variety of physical conditions, such as proximity to moving mechanical parts, moving vehicles, electrical current, working on scaffolding and high places, exposure to high heat or exposure to chemicals
    • The worker is subject to vibration. Exposure to oscillating movements of the extremities or whole body.
  • Physical Requirements:
    • Medium work. Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 30 pounds of force frequently, and/or up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects.
    • Work may require heavy lifting, stooping, climbing, prolonged standing, prolonged sitting, and working with or in areas where a potential could exist for exposure to physical, chemical, or biological agents.
    • Employee use of personal protective equipment (PPE) is required for some situations. PPE includes, but is not limited to, head, foot, torso, respiratory, vision, and hearing protective devices.
    • Must comply with all Fire and Safety Regulations and post policies.
