REQUIRED EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Nursing
  • Three years clinical experience

REQUIRED LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS OR CERTIFICATIONS:

  • Current RN license or valid permit to practice professional nursing in Texas
  • Certification in nursing specialty or administration within 12 months of hire

JOB SUMMARY:

The Assistant Nurse Manager assists the Nurse Manager in the achievement of the patient care unit(s) goals and objectives. This position works in a supportive manner as a resource for the patient care unit(s) and as a representative for the Nurse Manager.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  • Assists in the performance of the operational aspects of a designated patient care unit(s) while providing mentoring and leadership support to the unit(s) staff.
  • Performs integral quality (length of stay, mortality, readmission, case mix index, patient satisfaction, hospital acquired conditions etc.) functions to support the hospital’s patient-centered and high value core efforts.
  • Participates in and supports continuous quality improvement and risk management programs at the patient care unit(s) level.
  • Demonstrates a commitment to quality and excellence. Problems are solved through critical evaluation of data-based information and continuous improvement efforts that lead to effective quality-based information and outcomes. Accurately identify and diagnose an issue, identify alternatives, implement a plan, and evaluate and communicate results.
  • Facilitates the effective delivery of competent, compassionate care by monitoring and evaluating patient care processes and outcomes on the patient care unit(s).
  • Demonstrates a commitment to courteous, sincere, and sensitive customer service.
  • Presents a positive and caring attitude in all interactions with patients, visitors, staff and physicians. Remains patient, tolerant and accepting of diversity. Presents a positive image of himself/herself and of UTMB in all personal and telephone interactions.
  • Facilitates the planning, implementation, development, and evaluation of special projects, programs, and research as assigned.
  • Communicates with staff at all levels of the institution in a professional manner.
  • Interprets to staff the application and implementation of the philosophy, objectives, policies, and procedures of the patient care unit(s), department, and organization.
  • Identifies appropriate internal controls for department; provides mechanisms to monitor and enforce compliance.
  • Participates in the hiring process to ensure appropriate staffing for the department.
  • Mentors staff and objectively evaluates and documents performance, taking corrective action as appropriate.
  • Provides feedback for employee performance evaluations according to established timelines.
  • Serves as a liaison to the Nurse Manager and may act as Nurse Manager in the absence of Nurse Manager.
  • Utilizes Assessment and Evaluation Strategies-Utilizes a variety of strategies for the assessment and evaluation of learners in a variety of settings, as well as domains of learning. Analyzes assessment and evaluation data to improve professional development activities.

MARGINAL OR PERIODIC FUNCTIONS:

  • May share 24/7 accountability for assigned units with Nurse Manager(s).
  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure.
  • Performs related duties as required.

SALARY RANGE:

Salary commensurate with experience.
