The Carrier Development Specialist will be responsible for sourcing various transportation and logistics initiatives to help deliver US Foods key results around Safety, Service and EBITDA. You will use your sourcing experience and analytics skills to ensure our 3rd party contracted rates are at or below market benchmarks.Flexible Work Policy: The Carrier Development Specialist position has been segmented as Hybrid, meaning the work is a combination of onsite (only 2 days per month) and virtual. This position is based out of our corporate headquarters in Rosemont, IL
ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Carrier management
- Develop long term strategies with carrier partners to identify their capacity needs and match those needs with consistent opportunities within the US Foods network
- Effectively communicate with the carriers to understand their service capabilities and needs and maintain an actionable database to efficiently design solutions for our business
- Build long term relationships with carriers using collaborative approach that creates mutual value.
- Sourcing Activities
- Procure and negotiate price and capacity with a goal of creating benefit and overall increase in company profit, efficiency and service levels to support US Foods divisional needs
- Initiate Request for Information (RFI) for prospective suppliers as well as gain market intelligence with existing supplier base
- Initiate Request for Pricing (RFP) to optimize cost while minimizing service disruptions
- Contract negotiation with current/prospective suppliers
- Conduct analysis on bid data and present to business owners with different scenarios to consider for awards
- Create, send and track bid award files to suppliers
- Report out sourcing savings with a view towards cost reduction, cost avoidance and diverse inclusion/spend
- Operations support
- Support margin management efforts through additional sourcing/negotiating of negative lanes
- Support logistics development efforts through efficient sourcing and procuring cost effective transportation services for conversion opportunities and National Account lanes
- Work with Logistics Analysis team to ensure bid data is sound and accurate
- Work with cross functional teams and fleet management to ensure that routing decisions made between fleet and contract carrier optimizes freight cost and savings are realized
- Implement and maintain carrier rate tariffs in Transportation Management System.
- Assist with carrier sourcing and performance resolutions as necessary
- Assist with carrier claims resolution / collection where necessary.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education/Training:
- Bachelor's degree in business, engineering, logistics, transportation, supply chain or equivalent work experience.
Related Experience:
- Minimum 3 years experience in transportation, logistics or supply chain required
- Broad knowledge of Transportation Industry and carrier operations.
- Previous transportation sourcing experience
Desired Software Experience: Ariba, Coupa, Keelvar, Jaggaer, GEP or similar procurement software.
- Knowledge of various transportation modes that include Truckload, Intermodal, Less than Truckload and Rail Boxcar.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Access, Word and PowerPoint.
- Proven relationship building skills – ability to communicate with carrier leadership
- Highly analytical, ability to conduct advanced analysis independently
- Independent, self-motivated, proactive team player with strong work ethic

Grade: 13Compensation depends on relevant experience and/or education, specific skills, function, geographic location, and other factors as applicable by law (for example: state or local minimum wage thresholds). The expected base rate for this role is between
