Job Description:

Under general supervision, the Groundskeeper performs a variety of manual work assignments associated with the care and maintenance of the grounds at Coppin State University.

Responsibilities:

  • Assists landscape personnel with maintenance activities to include planting, transplanting, pruning, seeding, mulching, fertilizing and weeding.

  • Maintains roads, storm drains, and parking lots and to include ice and snow removal, removal of refuse, rubbish, leaves, dirt, etc., and tree removal.

  • Drives and provides routine preventative maintenance on Grounds vehicles.

  • Operates and maintains related hand and power equipment.

  • Assists and serves as back up to other trades.

  • Other related duties assigned. Specific duties and responsibilities may vary based upon departmental needs.

Minimum Qualifications:

EDUCATION

  • High School Diploma or GED.

EXPERIENCE

  • Knowledge and background in general landscape maintenance, building/grounds maintenance.

  • Experience in the maintenance of lawn and sports field irrigation systems desired.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Ability to read, write, and follow oral and written instructions.

  • Operating knowledge of and experience with personal computers, telephones, copier Email, etc.

  • Operate and perform minor maintenance on related equipment; and possess a working knowledge of tools, equipment and landscape techniques related to landscape maintenance.

  • Must be able to lift 50 pounds or more and work in rain, snow, heat and cold for long periods of time.

  • Ability to promote and follow University System of Maryland policies, Coppin State University policies and department procedures.

  • Ability to recognize the importance of safety in the workplace, follow safety rules, practice safe work habits, utilize appropriate safety equipment and report unsafe conditions to supervisor.

  • Perform extensive walking, standing, climbing and frequent lifting; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.

Conditions of Employment:

  • Criminal background check required for hire.

  • Valid and current driver’s license with no more than 5 points is required prior to hire.

  • Ability to complete the following training as required: forklift operation certification; lock out tag out, fall arrest, confined space, MSDS, ladder safety, emergency evacuation, in-house OSHA and respirator training.
