JOB SUMMARY
UT Southwestern is actively seeking a Staff Veterinarian to play a key role in advancing biomedical research through the delivery of exceptional medical and surgical care for research animals. This position upholds the highest standards of animal welfare, regulatory compliance, and ethical research practices. 

The Animal Resource Center (ARC) at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center (UTSWMC) is a large service unit that provides animal husbandry, investigator support, and veterinary care to the research programs on campus. The AAALACi accredited animal care program at UTSWMC employs 7 veterinarians, approximately 20 veterinary technicians and approximately 240 support and animal care staff. Multiple animal facilities encompass approximately 175,000 sq. ft. and house a variety of species but predominately rodents.

UTSWMC focuses on attracting and retaining pre-eminent researchers, while maintaining an environment that promotes research in diverse areas. UTSWMC has six Nobel laureates, 26 members of the National Academy of Sciences, and 17 members of the National Academy of Medicine. UTSWMC has more than 5,800 research projects under way with more than $554 million in annual funding.

Job responsibilities include providing clinical and surgical care to research and teaching animals at UTSWMC; providing technical support to research projects, collaborating with researchers; ensuring compliance with local, state, and federal regulations and AAALACi standards, and training research and animal care staff. The position reports to the Assistant Director of Veterinary Care.

The candidate must possess a DVM or equivalent degree from an AVMA accredited veterinary college and ability to obtain a veterinary medical license in Texas. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, as well as good organizational and administrative skills are essential. Experience with IACUC protocol review and a working knowledge of applicable federal regulations is preferred

Title and pay commiserate with experience; position may be filled as a Senior Staff Veterinarian.  Successful completion of a laboratory animal training program, ACLAM board eligibility, or current ACLAM certification is strongly preferred.

Working under moderate supervision, the Staff Veterinarian collaborates closely with researchers and institutional committees, supports animal health programs, oversees quarantine and colony health, and serves as a trusted expert on animal health matters, including providing leadership support. 

Work Location: Animal Resource Center (Dallas Campus); This position qualifies for Flexible Work.

Shift Requirement: Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM; rotate with colleagues on weekends and holidays

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

Required

  • Education
    DVM or VMD degree from AVMA accredited school 
     

Preferred

  • Education
    Completion of two (2) year postdoctoral training program 
     
  • Experience
    2 years of practical experience in clinical lab animal medicine. 
     
  • Licenses and Certifications
    Current licensure to practice veterinary medicine in the United States Upon Hire 
     


JOB DUTIES

  • Assists in providing medical and surgical care for research animals.
  • Coordinates health assessments of incoming non-commercial research animals.
  • Assists in Institutional Animal Care and Research Advisory Committee protocol reviews.
  • Represents the Animal Resources Center Director concerning animal health issues in event of his/her absence.
  • Communicates with research staff and faculty regarding animal health and welfare.
  • Assists with quarantine and health maintenance of animal colonies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
