JOB SUMMARY

As a Visitor Engagement Assistant (VEA), you are the face of our museums, welcoming a diverse visitor base of current and prospective students, staff and faculty, visiting scholars and artists, and the general Richmond community. VEAs greet and orient visitors, perform formal and informal tours, ensure the safety of collections, and assist with events and other museum projects. This is an opportunity to learn more about museum operations, hone communications skills, and immerse yourself in our art, history, and science collections.

We require a commitment to both fall and spring semesters, unless you have planned study abroad or intend to graduate early. Incoming VEAs will work 6-10 hours per week, though more hours may be available. You may be asked to work occasional evening events.

We operate two museums, one on each side of campus:
Harnett Museum of Art, located in the Modlin Center
• Hours: Tuesday – Saturday 11:00 am – 5 pm, occasional Thursday/Friday
evenings

Lora Robins Gallery, located in Boatwright Memorial Library
• Hours: Monday – Friday 11:00 am – 5 pm

SPECIFIC DUTIES:
• Welcome all visitors with enthusiasm. Introduce current exhibitions and upcoming events, provide campus directions, and answer questions.
• Enforce gallery rules to protect the collections. Roam galleries to ensure compliance.
• Perform exhibit tours, develop educational materials for visitors, and support museum projects as needed.
• Report visitation data and interactions.
• Assist with museum programs, including lectures, K-12 tours, receptions, and artmaking events.

QUALIFICATIONS:
• Interest in visual arts, natural history, and museums.
• Commitment to friendly and professional customer service.
• Punctuality, dependability, and excellent oral communication skills.
• Ability to work independently.

Pay Grade: SP Student 2, starting at $14.10
