The Sheet Metal Design Specialist delivers advanced customer-specific courses and applications engineering support on sheet metal design optimization and manufacturing techniques. This role combines technical expertise in design, manufacturing engineering, and machine applications with strong instructional and interpersonal skills. The position is essential to TRUMPF's mission of enabling customers to maximize value from sheet metal design, manufacturing solutions, and TRUMPF machine capabilities.
Job Duties & Responsibilities
Course Management & Delivery
Consult with customers to define course content and optimization opportunities; coordinate scheduling, facilities, and materials
Conduct internal and external courses on sheet metal optimization with professional demonstrations and presentations
Customize content for customer-specific questions and deliver in English and multiple languages
Create course documentation, assess effectiveness, and identify follow-up opportunities
Applications Engineering & Technical Solutions
Provide advanced applications engineering using TRUMPF tools (TRUMPF software, CAD/CAM) for design optimization and machine programming
Execute advanced programming (online/offline), create time studies and sample parts, and develop optimizations for cutting, punching, bending, and forming
Conduct technical analysis of customer parts to identify efficiency improvements and determine proper tool selection
Apply comprehensive knowledge of TRUMPF documentation and machine capabilities to solve complex challenges
Customer Support & Relationship Management
Provide ongoing technical support (phone/email) for applications and design questions
Evaluate feedback, implement corrective measures, and maintain customer relationships through account management and events
Conduct feasibility studies for new applications and manage production coordination with Sales
Training Development & Knowledge Transfer
Identify emerging training needs and develop new course concepts, tools, and documentation
Train team members and colleagues on applications techniques, advanced programming, and design optimization
Maintain and upgrade course infrastructure and stay current with industry trends
Sales Support & Business Development
Support sales teams with machine demonstrations, consultations, and targeted presentations at customer sites and trade shows
Coordinate course offerings, acquire new customers, and assist Sales in identifying customer needs
Advise departments on sheet metal developments and support production/quality optimization
National and international travel expected (50%): customer sites, trade shows, TRUMPF locations, training centers
Education & Experience
College degree in mechanical, manufacturing, or related engineering field
Minimum 2–3 years in sheet metal design/manufacturing, machine tool applications, CAD/CAM programming, or technical training
Preferred: TRUMPF product experience
Sheet metal design principles, optimization strategies, and manufacturing techniques (cutting, punching, bending, forming, welding)
Proficiency with CAD/CAM tools (TruTops preferred), TRUMPF software, machine control/offline programming, and time study software
Understanding of sheet metal machinery, presses, bending systems, and laser cutting systems
Technical analysis and design optimization capabilities
Salary Range: $76,625 - $137,225
