The Opportunity

What You Will Be Doing

  • Production Underwriting of profitable new and renewal Casualty business, (General Liability, Umbrella and Excess).
  • Risk selection and analysis using logical, methodical underwriting tools and methods to support business.
  • Ensuring all files are well documented and comply with departmental requirements
  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with our broker partners
  • Market presentations and relationship management ability to help develop business
  • Working collaboratively with colleagues for multi-line approach
  • Identify cross selling opportunities
  • Facultative Reinsurance placements (as per departmental guidelines)
  • Grow target business and maintain profitability
  • Ability to conduct peer reviews and broker/MGA audits
  • Ability to train/mentor designated staff
  • Internal monthly and quarterly review presentations on results and production
  • Ongoing learning and updating of changes in marketplace, insurance trends, and litigation
  • You may also be required to assist with broader company tasks as needed


Who You Are

You have direct experience in casualty underwriting. You are team player with a positive attitude who thrives in a consensus culture with an emphasis on collaboration. You are a self-starter who is excited by the opportunity to jump right in and can come up to speed quickly. You are comfortable working on a lean team and are not afraid to roll up your sleeves and do the work that needs to be done.


What you Bring:

  • A university degree or college diploma.
  • 7+ years of experience in liability insurance.
  • Experience in commercial general liability, umbrella, and excess liability
  • Experience underwriting in all hazard categories (low, moderate, & high)
  • Experience underwriting within the following segments: Manufacturing/Distribution and Wholesale, Construction and contractors, Hospitality, Commercial Realty, Retail
  • Experience underwriting risks with USA and foreign products and operations exposures
  • The ability to negotiate and define specific terms and conditions of our policies with brokers/MGAs
  • File review/audit capabilities for peer and broker reviews.
  • A high level of organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • A proven ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines, driving for results.
  • Thought leadership and can innovate solutions quickly.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Experience working closely with others and enjoy an atmosphere of cross-collaboration.
  • The ability to thrive in a changing environment and be comfortable with ambiguity.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Teams, and Outlook.

The anticipated base salary range for this position is (115,000-130,000). Compensation may vary for roles in other regions to reflect local market conditions and currency differences. At Tokio Marine Canada, our salary ranges are designed to reflect the skills, experience, and responsibilities required for each role while providing room for growth. For experienced professionals, offers are typically positioned near the midpoint of the range. The upper end of the range is reserved for individuals who consistently deliver exceptional performance and impact. Candidates who are newer to the role may start below the midpoint, with opportunities to progress as they develop. Final offer decisions take into account factors such as location, relevant experience, and individual skill set.

We work in a hybrid model, and you should expect to split your time between working in the office and working remotely, with flexibility based on the role and the business needs. We currently have an office in downtown Toronto and will eventually be establishing offices in other provinces. Should you currently work in a province where we do not have an office, you will remain remote until such time as we do establish an office.
