Role Overview

Reporting to the Café Lead, the Barista is responsible for delivering exceptional customer experiences while preparing high-quality coffee beverages and café products that reflect Ethical Bean's commitment to quality, sustainability, and transparency. The role maintains café cleanliness and food safety standards, supports daily café operations, and contributes to a welcoming, engaging, and high-performing café environment.

Responsibilities

  • Follow all HACCP, GMP, Organic, Fairtrade, and Food Safety requirements.
  • Prepare and serve coffee beverages and café products according to established quality standards.
  • Deliver exceptional customer service and create a welcoming experience for all guests.
  • Accurately process customer orders and payments through point-of-sale systems.
  • Maintain product quality, beverage consistency, and presentation standards.
  • Educate customers on Ethical Bean products, sustainability practices, Fairtrade sourcing, and brewing methods.
  • Maintain cleanliness and organization throughout the café, service areas, and customer spaces.
  • Monitor product freshness and ensure food and beverage items meet quality standards.
  • Assist with opening, closing, and daily café operational procedures.
  • Restock coffee, food, retail products, cups, lids, and other café supplies.
  • Promote and sell Ethical Bean retail products, coffee beans, and café merchandise while assisting customers with product selection.
  • Escalate customer concerns, equipment issues, food safety concerns, or inventory shortages promptly.
  • Support inventory counts and product rotation activities according to FIFO practices.
  • Operate espresso machines, grinders, brewers, and café equipment safely and effectively.
  • Perform routine cleaning and basic maintenance of espresso machines, grinders, brewers, and café equipment.
  • Identify opportunities to improve customer experience, operational efficiency, and café performance.
  • Participate in continuous improvement activities and problem-solving initiatives.
  • Support root cause investigations and corrective actions related to customer service, product quality, food safety, and café operations.
  • Identify, report, and help eliminate workplace hazards in support of Ethical Bean's goal of zero injuries.

Requirements

  • High school completion
  • Ability to communicate effectively in spoken and written English.
  • Strong customer service and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced team environment.
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and perform repetitive tasks safely and consistently.
  • Basic math skills and basic computer skills.
  • Ability to accurately handle cash, electronic payments, and point-of-sale transactions.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to beverage quality and consistency.
  • Ability to maintain a positive and professional demeanor while interacting with customers.
  • Experience in a café, restaurant, retail, hospitality, or customer service environment is considered an asset.
  • Experience preparing coffee beverages or operating espresso equipment is considered an asset.
  • Interest in coffee, sustainability, ethical sourcing, and customer education is considered an asset.
  • Flexibility to work varying shifts as business needs require.
