Scope of Position
The Design Associate – Structural is responsible for structural design of basic elements for assigned projects. Work of increasing complexity to meet eligibility requirements to take professional licensing exam. Works with licensed design professional for the production of innovative, appropriate, cost effective, designs, drawings and specifications in structural engineering for assigned projects.
Job Responsibilities
- Application of Building Systems Knowledge:
- Produces calculation/documents.
- Develops a basic understanding of the various model building and materials codes.
- Design
- Prepares clear, complete and concise calculations including software models.
- Develops all details necessary for assigned elements.
- Prepares design criteria for assigned projects.
- Responsible for the production of well-organized structural documents and calculations which are accurate, clear, concise, and complete.
- Participates in design reviews with the design team as required.
Design Associate II Additional Responsibilities:
- Coordinates work with other disciplines. Performs some interdisciplinary coordination checks to minimize deficiencies, errors and omissions in drawings and specifications.
- Construction Support
- Responds to assigned RFI’s and reviews submittals for compliance in a timely manner.
- Participates in assigned preconstruction/preparatory meetings.
- Prepares assigned field orders, addenda and record drawings.
Design Associate II Additional Responsibilities:
- Reviews all structural related testing and inspection reports.
- Performs assigned site visits & prepares observation/follow-up phase reports documenting progress and deficiencies as requested.
- Project Management
- Communicates effectively with external/internal Customers and staff in a professional manner conveying pertinent project information as required. Attends project meetings as requested.
- Planning, Scheduling and Profitability:
- Completes all assigned work on time.
- Monitors projects for scope creep and reports changes to the Engineer of Record.
- Professional Development
- Working towards become registered as a PE.
- Attends training provided by senior staff to improve base knowledge.
- Actively participates in local professional organization(s).
- Improves ability to use all structural design, AutoCAD and 3D modeling software.
- Leadership
- Participates in management and leadership training as requested by Group Lead and/or Practice Area Lead.
- Travel as required.
- Other duties which may be assigned as needed.
Education & Years of Experience
- Design Associate I: Bachelor of Science degree in accredited curriculum such as civil or architectural engineering.
- Design Associate II: Bachelor of Science degree in accredited curriculum such as civil or architectural engineering plus 2-4 years of industry related experience.
Qualifications
Basic presentation skills
Basic written and verbal communication skills
Qualifications Design Associate II:
Ability to work with a laptop, tablet (iPad or Microsoft equivalent), and mobile devices.
Ability to access project information remotely when working outside the office using VPN and/or Citrix.
Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
Basic understanding of the following structural software: Concrete Anchor Design (Hilti Profis Anchor/Powers Design Assist 360/Simpson Anchor Design), Enercalc, E-TABS, Mathcad, RAM Structural System (RAM Steel, RAM Concrete, RAM Frame, RAM Foundation), Ram Elements, Ram Concept, , SAFE, Tedds.
Ability to work within Revit.
Passed Fundamentals of Engineering Exam

Environmental Factors and/or Physical Requirements
While performing the duties of this job, this position is required to have ordinary ambulatory skills sufficient to visit other locations; and the ability to stand, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, and manipulate (lift, carry, move) light to medium weights of 10-50 pounds. Requires good hand-eye coordination, arm, hand and finger dexterity, including ability to grasp, and visual acuity to use a keyboard, operate equipment and read application/form information. The associate frequently is required to sit, reach with hands and arms, talk and hear.
