Manual Grinder (Level III Machinist)

 

Position Summary

The Manual Grinder (Level III Machinist) is responsible for performing precision grinding operations on a variety of components to achieve extremely tight tolerances and superior surface finishes. This role requires advanced experience with manual grinding equipment, a strong understanding of materials, and the ability to independently determine machining processes. This position builds upon Level II Machinist capabilities, with a specialized focus on manual grinding and finishing operations.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform precision manual grinding operations including surface, cylindrical, and internal grinding to exact specifications
  • Achieve and maintain tight tolerances and fine surface finishes on a variety of materials
  • Select appropriate grinding wheels, speeds, feeds, and setups based on material type and job requirements
  • Independently determine workholding methods, setups, and grinding sequences to ensure accuracy and efficiency
  • Inspect finished parts using precision measuring instruments to verify conformance to specifications
  • Perform precision handwork such as lapping, polishing, and fitting to complete parts as required
  • Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, and specifications to determine grinding requirements
  • Troubleshoot and resolve issues related to dimensional accuracy, surface finish, and machine performance
  • Maintain equipment and ensure proper machine setup and operation for optimal performance
  • Collaborate with machinists and supervisors to improve processes and ensure quality standards are met

 

Qualifications

  • Meets all requirements of a Level II Machinist
  • Proven experience in manual grinding (surface, cylindrical, and/or internal grinding)
  • Strong knowledge of metals and material properties as they relate to grinding applications
  • Advanced understanding of machining processes, tolerances, and surface finish requirements
  • Ability to read and interpret complex engineering drawings and specifications
  • Proficiency with precision measuring instruments including micrometers, calipers, height gauges, and indicators
  • Strong mathematical skills including geometry and trigonometry

  • Manufacturing environment with a focus on precision machining and finishing
  • Requires attention to detail and adherence to quality and safety standards
