About the Role

 

As a Natural Perils Data Scientist, you will help design and enhance computational models used to assess the impact of cyclones, floods, bushfires, earthquakes and severe storms. You will combine AI, cloud technologies and scientific modelling to improve how risk is understood and priced. This role partners with technical specialists and business stakeholders to deliver robust, data-driven solutions that support insurance outcomes and community resilience across Australia.

 

What You'll Do

 

  • Design and implement AI workflows that support model development, optimisation, validation and documentation.
  • Build retrieval-augmented generation systems integrating scientific literature, technical documentation and code repositories.
  • Develop prompt engineering frameworks that generate high-quality numerical computing solutions.
  • Evaluate AI capabilities and recommend new tools, models and approaches for team adoption.
  • Establish quality controls and validation processes for AI-assisted technical outputs.
  • Collaborate with stakeholders across pricing, underwriting, claims and reinsurance to share insights and expertise.

 

What You'll Bring

 

  • Postgraduate qualifications in computer science, data science, physics, engineering, actuarial studies or a related technical discipline.
  • At least 3+ years’ experience applying AI and machine learning techniques within complex modelling environments.
  • Strong programming capability in Python and exposure to technologies such as PyTorch, TensorFlow, C/C++ or Fortran.
  • Knowledge of cloud platforms, preferably AWS, and experience using large-scale computational resources.
  • Expertise in model development, testing, validation, mathematics and statistical analysis.
  • Experience in insurance, engineering, and the climate science fields would be advantageous, though not essential.
