About the Role:

The Program Specialist/Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) plays a pivotal role in designing, implementing, and evaluating therapeutic recreation programs that enhance the physical, emotional, and social well-being of diverse client populations. This position requires a deep understanding of therapeutic recreation principles to create individualized and group activities that promote health, independence, and quality of life. The specialist collaborates with interdisciplinary teams to assess client needs, develop treatment plans, and monitor progress toward therapeutic goals. Additionally, the role involves educating clients, families, and staff about the benefits of therapeutic recreation and advocating for resources to support program success. Ultimately, the Program Specialist/CTRS ensures that all programs comply with regulatory standards and best practices while fostering an inclusive and supportive environment for participants.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Therapeutic Recreation, Recreation Therapy, or a related field.
  • Demonstrated experience in planning and implementing therapeutic recreation programs.
  • Strong knowledge of therapeutic recreation principles, techniques, and best practices.
  • Ability to conduct client assessments and develop individualized treatment plans.

Responsibilities:

  • Develop, plan, and implement therapeutic recreation programs tailored to meet the needs of clients with varying abilities and conditions.
  • Conduct comprehensive assessments of clients’ recreational interests, abilities, and therapeutic goals to inform individualized treatment plans.
  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals, social workers, and family members to coordinate care and integrate therapeutic recreation into overall treatment strategies.
  • Monitor and document client progress, adjusting programs as necessary to achieve optimal therapeutic outcomes.
  • Provide education and training to staff, clients, and families on therapeutic recreation techniques and benefits.
  • Ensure compliance with all relevant laws, regulations, and accreditation standards related to therapeutic recreation services.
  • Manage program resources, including equipment and supplies, to maintain a safe and effective therapeutic environment.
  • Participate in continuous professional development and contribute to program evaluation and quality improvement initiatives.

Skills:

The required and preferred skills are integral to the daily responsibilities of the Program Specialist/CTRS. Strong assessment and interpersonal skills enable effective evaluation of client needs and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. Program development and implementation skills ensure that therapeutic activities are engaging, evidence-based, and tailored to individual goals. Proficiency in documentation and compliance supports accurate record-keeping and adherence to regulatory standards. Additionally, communication and educational skills are essential for training staff and informing clients and families about therapeutic recreation benefits, fostering a supportive and inclusive environment.
