Job Summary:
The Controls Engineer I is responsible for the recommendation, development, installation, debug, and maintenance of controls systems utilized in a wide variety of plantwide equipment while adhering to required guidelines of a regulated plastics processing and high-speed automation industry.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
- Contribute to the development and realization of digital solutions to satisfy customer product requirements including but not limited to: device serialization, data historian / operational data retrieval and recommendation of digital data storage architecture in a regulated industry.
- Lead research, review, and recommend systems to improve digital solutions to monitor machine operational performance for company and customer owned equipment used in the production of medical devices Responsible for proper documentation, operation instructions, and training aids if required.
- Recommend and implement controls systems and support for facility improvement activities such as building management systems, security systems and IT infrastructure recommendations.
- Contribute and execute computer systems validations (CSV) if needed. Includes documenting procedures used and test results and analysis.
- Ability to understand IQMS ERP system and work with IT to integrate with control systems or Line Performance Management systems as needed.
- Works within team to set up recommended controls systems in a new plant.
- Support new product engineering teams as required.
- Perform other duties as required. Abide by all applicable SMC procedures and guidelines.
Essential Qualifications:
- 1-3 years’ hands on experience with equipment, automation / robotics, machines, and or any electromechanically system including facilities.
- Bachelor of Science Degree in a related field.
- Ability to work from 2D prints and CAD details and review 3D solid models. (SolidWorks experience is recommended.)
- Experience and or interest with PLC programming, Vision systems, robotics, pneumatics, electronics.
- Strong interpersonal, leadership and communication skills.
- Strong team player. Able to self-direct activities with minimal managerial input to meet project deadlines.
- Ability to read, write, speak and understand English.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Robotic programming experience, vision systems
- Experience with line performance management systems.
- Experience with lean manufacturing concepts.
ADA Requirements:
- Stand, walk, bend, squat, twist, reach or otherwise move frequently
- Occasional repetitive motion and grasping
- Occasional climbing to reach areas on machines or racks
- Lift, move or otherwise transfer up to 50 lbs. occasionally, >20 lbs. frequently
- Typically sits, grasps items or performs keyboarding for occasional operation of a computer
- Exposure to typical machine shop physical hazards which may require respiratory protection
- Travel by air or car frequently
