Payroll and Time & Attendance Manager
About this role
Seasalt began in 1981 with a small shop in Penzance, selling workwear to local mariners and practical overalls to artists. Today, we’ve grown into a thriving omnichannel retailer with over 80 UK and Ireland stores, 400+ wholesale stockists, and a growing international and online footprint.
As a B Corp and winner of both Drapers “Best Place to Work” and CIPD’s “Best Recognition Programme”, we care deeply about our people, our communities and our long-term impact. Our Head Office teams provide the foundations that empower our people to drive sustainable growth across the UK and international markets.
The Payroll Manager is responsible for the end-to-end delivery of accurate and timely payroll for all employees across our business. Leading a team of Payroll Administrators, this role ensures compliance with all statutory requirements and company policies, while driving continuous improvement in payroll processes and controls. The Payroll Manager also has overall responsibility for the time and attendance (T&A) system, ensuring accurate capture of hours worked and alignment with pay and absence records.
This is a full-time, permanent role, and is based remotely within the UK, with monthly travel to our Cornwall head offices.
You’ll help us by:
- Leading end-to-end monthly and hourly payroll for c.1,300 employees across Head Office, Retail and Warehouse.
- Ensuring compliance with HMRC, pensions auto-enrolment, salary sacrifice and all statutory requirements.
- Maintaining and improving payroll policies, processes and controls, ensuring documentation and cover for absences.
- Managing year-end payroll activity, including P60s, P11Ds/payrolled benefits and HMRC submissions.
- Working closely with Finance and HR on payroll reconciliation, reporting and insights to support workforce planning, absence and pay accuracy.
- Monitoring legislative and regulatory changes, acting as subject matter expert for the payroll team, wider HR team and business stakeholders.
- Managing payroll bureau relationships, including oversight of ROI payroll compliance.
- Owning payroll relationships with PEO/EOR providers for overseas employees.
- Leading, coaching and developing Payroll Administrators, promoting accuracy, efficiency and a strong customer focus.
- Allocating workload, meeting deadlines and resolving issues promptly.
- Owning the time and attendance system, ensuring accurate data capture and effective manager engagement, delivering training and preparing communications as needed.
- Driving improvements to time and attendance processes, systems and training in collaboration with stakeholders.
- Contributing to wider HR, Payroll and Reward projects as required.
The skills you’ll be sharing with the team:
- A formal technical payroll qualification – CIPP, IAB, AAT or equivalent (or demonstrable equivalent competence from on-the-job learning).
- Proven track record of managing payroll for a medium to large workforce (c.1,000+ employees), with a mix of hourly and salaried employees.
- Strong knowledge of current UK payroll legislation, GDPR, HMRC reporting, pensions, and statutory requirements.
- Experience of both payroll and time and attendance systems (Dayforce preferred but not essential).
- Previous experience leading and developing a small payroll team.
- Fluent English language skills, both written and spoken, sufficient to perform the role effectively and support clear communication across the business.
- Excellent attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.
- Strong organisational and problem-solving skills.
- Strong Excel skills to enable analysis of 1,000s of data points when needed (eg XLOOKUPS, SUMIFS etc).
- Drive and tenacity in implementing improvements and efficiencies in working practices.
