Education and Work Experience:

Scope of Position:
The Director of Community Engagement (Ada County) provides strategic leadership for fund raising, donor relations, community partnerships, marketing, communications, and volunteer engagement for The Salvation Army Boise Corps. This position integrates development, public relations, and community engagement functions to increase philanthropic support, strengthen community visibility, and advance the mission of The Salvation Army.
This role supervises and coordinates fundraising events, annual giving, communications, media relations, Echelon Board engagement, and volunteer-driven initiatives, while serving as a key ambassador to donors, partners, media, and the broader community.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Development & Fundraising Leadership
- Provide strategic direction and oversight for all fund-raising activities, including annual giving, special events, sponsorships, and seasonal campaigns.
- Develop and manage a comprehensive annual development plan aligned with Corps goals and divisional strategy. The plan must be approved by the Corps Administrators.
- Oversee signature events and seasonal initiatives, including Red Kettle Kick-off, Back-to-School, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Daffodil Tea, and other donor engagement activities.
- Identify, cultivate, solicit, steward, and retain individual donors, sponsors, foundations, and corporate partners.
- Ensure timely and accurate donor acknowledgment, recognition, and stewardship activities.
- Monitor fundraising performance, track metrics, and ensure funds-raised-to-expense ratios meet best-practice standards.
- Collaborate with divisional development staff and comply with Salvation Army policies and procedures related to gifts and pledges.
Community Engagement & Partnerships
- Serve as a visible representative for The Salvation Army Boise Corps in the community with coordination with Corps Administrators.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with community leaders, businesses, faith partners, service clubs, and collaborative organizations.
- Coordinate community education, tours, and presentations that communicate The Salvation Army's impact and case for support.
- Manage the Advisory Board Program and Fund raising Committee and develop AB leadership for both.
- Manage the Echelon Board and its committees
- Recruit, coordinate, and support volunteers for the Salvation Army programs in Ada County
- Lead volunteer recruitment and retention efforts and collaborate with department heads to coordinate and support volunteer opportunities.
Communications, Marketing & Public Relations
- Provide oversight with Corps Administrators of all communications, marketing, and public relations activities.
- Ensure consistent messaging, branding, and storytelling across print, digital, social media, and traditional media channels.
- Oversee press releases, media relations, interviews, and publicity for programs, events, and campaigns.
- Guide content development for website, social media, donor communications, and publications.
- Maintain an annual communications and fund raising calendar.
- Develop a minimum once a month informational email to Ada County partners and donors.
Events & Seasonal Campaign Management
- Direct planning and execution of fundraising and community engagement events, including logistics, sponsorships, volunteer coordination, marketing, and follow-up.
- Provide leadership for Christmas operations in collaboration with program and volunteer teams, including Red Kettle, toy and food drives, and special holiday events.
- Ensure compliance with Salvation Army policies, safety standards, and financial controls during all events and campaigns.
Leadership & Administration
- Supervise and support development, communications, and volunteer engagement staff and interns as applicable.
- Collaborate closely with Corps Officers, program staff, and advisory board members.
- Participate in professional development, fundraising associations, and continuing education.
- Perform other duties as assigned to support the mission and operations of The Salvation Army.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Education & Experience
- Minimum Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university required; degree in nonprofit management, communications, marketing, business, or related field preferred.
- Minimum of 5 years of progressive experience in nonprofit development, fundraising, communications, or community engagement.
- Demonstrated success leading fundraising events, annual giving, donor relations, and community partnerships.
- Supervisory or management experience preferred.
Skills & Competencies
- Strong commitment to the mission, values, and principles of The Salvation Army.
- Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
- Proven ability to build relationships with donors, volunteers, media, and community partners.
- Highly organized with the ability to manage multiple projects, deadlines, and seasonal priorities.
- Public speaking and presentation skills.
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, donor databases, and digital communication platforms.
- Knowledge of marketing, public relations, and social media best practices.
Additional Requirements
- Valid driver's license, ability to pass Salvation Army Driver's Test, and reliable transportation.
- Ability to work evenings, weekends, and non-traditional hours as required.
- Commitment to a drug- and alcohol-free lifestyle while representing The Salvation Army.
