Position Summary

The Executive Underwriter – Professional Liability is responsible for driving profitable growth through the underwriting and management of a portfolio of Architects & Engineers (A&E) Professional Liability risks, while supporting broader Errors & Omissions (E&O) initiatives. This role evaluates complex risks, develops tailored coverage solutions, and partners closely with retail brokers to expand business opportunities and strengthen key market relationships.

The Executive Underwriter serves as a senior technical resource within the team, balancing growth and profitability objectives while partnering with underwriting leadership on portfolio strategy, broker engagement, and market development.

What will your job entail?

Key Responsibilities:

Underwriting & Portfolio Management

  • Independently underwrite and manage a portfolio of Professional Liability risks, with a primary focus on Architects & Engineers accounts.

  • Evaluate small and middle market risks, including complex exposures, to ensure sound risk selection and profitable portfolio growth.

  • Analyze submissions, financial information, loss history, and operational exposures to determine appropriate pricing, coverage structure, and terms.

  • Underwrite both admitted and surplus lines business within delegated underwriting authority.

Broker & Market Development

  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with retail brokers and distribution partners on a national basis.

  • Identify and pursue new business opportunities within targeted markets and industry segments.

  • Negotiate pricing, coverage, and policy terms while maintaining underwriting discipline and profitability objectives.

  • Collaborate with brokers to develop solutions that meet client needs and support long-term business growth.

Strategy & Technical Expertise

  • Support underwriting leadership in executing portfolio strategies and achieving business objectives.

  • Monitor market conditions, industry trends, and competitive developments impacting Professional Liability business.

  • Contribute technical expertise related to A&E Professional Liability and other E&O products, including Accountants Professional Liability exposures.

  • Assist in the development and enhancement of underwriting guidelines, product offerings, and best practices.

Collaboration & Portfolio Performance

  • Partner with Claims, Actuarial, Product, Legal, and Compliance teams to support underwriting decisions and portfolio management.

  • Monitor portfolio performance, including premium growth, retention, profitability, and loss ratio trends.

  • Maintain accurate underwriting documentation and ensure compliance with company guidelines and regulatory requirements.

  • Provide mentorship and technical guidance to less experienced underwriting staff as needed.

Qualifications:

Education & Experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Risk Management, Business Administration, Finance, Insurance, or a related field preferred.

  • 10+ years of Professional Liability / E&O underwriting experience.

  • Significant experience underwriting Architects & Engineers Professional Liability risks required.

  • Exposure to other Professional Liability products preferred.

  • Experience underwriting both admitted and surplus lines business.

  • Demonstrated success evaluating small and middle market accounts, including complex risks, while balancing growth and profitability objectives.

  • Established relationships with retail brokers within the Professional Liability marketplace strongly preferred.

Licenses & Certifications

  • State Property & Casualty and/or Surplus Lines license required.

  • CPCU, AU, RPLU, or other relevant insurance designations preferred.

Skills & Competencies

  • Deep expertise in Professional Liability and Errors & Omissions underwriting.

  • Strong understanding of Architects & Engineers risk exposures and coverage considerations.

  • Advanced risk assessment, pricing, and coverage analysis capabilities.

  • Proven relationship-building and broker management skills.

  • Strong negotiation, communication, and presentation abilities.

  • Strategic mindset with a focus on profitable growth and portfolio management.

  • Ability to work independently while serving as a senior technical partner within the team.

The target salary range for this position is $160,000.00 - $200,000.00 annually.

The wage range for this role considers many factors, such as training, transferable skills, work experience, licensure and certification, business needs, and market demands. The pay range is subject to change and may be modified in the future. Full-time roles are eligible for bonuses and benefits.
