Position Overview:

The Perioperative Registered Nurse (RN) is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to patients throughout the surgical experience, from admission to discharge, within the Ambulatory Surgery Center (ASC). This role involves assessing patient status, administering care, monitoring progress, and effectively communicating with the surgical team to ensure patient safety and comfort.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. General Responsibilities:
    • Efficiently organize and manage surgery center resources.
    • Delegate nursing tasks based on staff abilities and qualifications.
    • Utilize medical equipment effectively and adhere to accepted standards of practice.
    • Maintain cleanliness and order in the surgery center.
  2. Preoperative Area:
    • Obtain and review patient records, conducting thorough preoperative assessments.
    • Provide clear preoperative instructions, explain procedures, and obtain informed consent.
    • Perform preoperative testing, promptly reporting any abnormal values.
    • Transport patients to the operating room, ensuring their comfort and privacy.
  3. Procedure Room:
    • Prepare the procedure room according to patient and procedure requirements.
    • Assess patient status, assist with positioning, and support anesthesia administration.
    • Perform duties as a circulating, scrub, or conscious sedation nurse.
    • Assist in site identification and confirm the time-out procedure.
  4. Recovery:
    • Document post-anesthesia care and continuously monitor patients during recovery.
    • Provide nursing care and promptly inform the surgical team of any complications.
    • Conduct thorough postoperative assessments and prepare patients for discharge.
    • Review postoperative instructions with patients and their families.

Qualifications:

  • Education and Experience:
    • High school diploma or GED required.
    • Bachelor’s degree in nursing (BSN) preferred.
    • 12 to 18 months of related experience and/or training, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Required Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
    • Current Registered Nurse (RN) License.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification.
    • Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification.
  • Preferred Certificates, Licenses, Registrations:
    • Certified Perioperative Nurse (CNOR).
    • BSN (Bachelor of Science in Nursing).
    • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support).
  • Skills and Abilities:
    • Strong attention to detail and ability to maintain a sterile environment.
    • Effective communication and collaboration skills to work closely with the surgical team.
    • Basic proficiency in software for data entry and word processing.
    • Ability to handle high-stress situations and respond quickly to changing circumstances.
