Overview

Under direction, the purpose of the position is to operate heavy trucks and equipment in the pick-up, distribution, transport, and delivery of various materials for the school district. Employees in this classification bring previous experience to the work, and are capable of leading work crews in the operation of automotive trucks and equipment according to assigned work orders. Position transports items including, but not necessarily limited to, work site waste and debris, portable classrooms, heavy equipment, concrete and asphalt, and construction materials. Duties are physically demanding, requiring incumbents to exercise considerable dexterity and physical agility in operating multiple controls to excavate, load, transfer, and unload of equipment and materials. Performs related work as directed.

Responsibilities and Qualifications

EXAMPLES OF ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSResponds to internal and external customers in a timely, accurate, courteous and empathetic manner representing OCPS in a positive light.Functions in a lead worker capacity for work crews engaged in retrieval, removal, demolition, transfer, excavation, loading and distribution of equipment and materials at various school location work sites.Operates a variety of trucks and associated automotive equipment as applicable to assigned work orders, i.e., dump trucks, front end loaders, back hoes, graders, bull dozers, forklifts, tractors, rollers, bucket trucks, hydraulic cranes.Observes standards of safe truck and equipment operation on highways, roadways, and school grounds to ensure the protection of life and property.Transports and delivers items including, but not necessarily limited to, work site waste and debris, portable classrooms, heavy equipment, concrete and asphalt, and construction materials.Maintains vehicle service records and repair logs; adheres to established preventive maintenance and service schedules.Performs various basic to semi-skilled trades and property maintenance functions within scope of abilities, as acquired through time and experience in the work.Responsible for keeping up to date on current technology, as job appropriate, being used by OCPS. With the support of the district, attends training to ensure skill level in various technologies is at the level required to perform in current position.Responsible for timely and accurate information they maintain as part of their job responsibilities.The list of essential functions, as outlined herein, is intended to be representative of the tasks performed within this classification. The omission of an essential function does not preclude management from assigning duties not listed herein if such functions are a logical assignment to the position.MARGINAL FUNCTIONSWhile the following tasks are necessary for the work of the unit, they are not an essential part of the purpose of this position and may also be performed by other unit members.Performs related duties as directed.MINIMUM TRAINING AND EXPERIENCEHigh school diploma or GED; supplemented by minimum (3) years progressively skilled heavy truck and equipment operating experience, demonstrating safe and effective equipment operation requiring setting and adjustment of multiple controls and conditions; with ability to maintain basic activity and numerical records; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience. Requires ability to maintain a valid commercial driver’s license class “A”.PERFORMANCE APTITUDESData Utilization: Requires the ability to calculate, compute, summate, and/or tabulate data and/or information. Includes performing subsequent actions in relation to these computational operations.Human Interaction: Requires the ability to provide leadership, guidance, assistance, and/or interpretation to others on how to apply procedures and standards to specific situations.Equipment, Machinery, Tools, and Materials Utilization: Requires the ability to operate, maneuver and/or control the actions of heavy trucks and associated automotive equipment.Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference, descriptive and design data and information.Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform addition, subtraction, multiplication and division; calculate decimals and percentages.Functional Reasoning: Requires ability to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagrammatic form. Every year, more than 100 graduates from OCPS high schools are accepted into top-20 colleges and universities around the country, as well as U.S. service academies. The district also boasts a 97.9% graduate rate among its 20 traditional high schools.

By 2020, every OCPS student had a laptop or digital device as a part of an aggressive and innovative digital learning program. The Center for Digital Education and National School Boards Association ranks OCPS among the top 10 on its annual Digital School Districts Survey. Currently, every secondary student has a laptop.

OCPS celebrated its 150th anniversary in December 2019. Thanks to Orange County voters and taxpayers, 50 new schools have been built and more than 120 school construction projects completed since 2003.
