Job Description

Diet Rep/Food Service Worker

Northwestern Medicine Location: Valley West Hospital

Department: Food and Nutrition Services

Schedule: 20 hours per week

The Diet Rep/Food Service Worker reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

At Valley West Hospital, this role works alongside a collaborative team to support all aspects of food service operations, including meal preparation, service, sanitation, stocking, and customer support. Team members share responsibilities across the department to ensure efficient operations and outstanding service for patients, visitors, and staff.

Specific Responsibilities:

  • Prepare and serve food for patients, visitors, and cafeteria guests, including cold food preparation, tray assembly, and room service order processing.
  • Provide excellent customer service by assisting patients and families, resolving concerns, and ensuring satisfaction with food quality and service.
  • Process patient diet orders, menu selections, admissions, discharges, transfers, and related nutrition documentation accurately and timely.
  • Maintain compliance with food safety, sanitation, infection prevention, and departmental policies while completing required documentation.
  • Perform dishwashing, cleaning, sanitizing, stocking, and inventory rotation (FIFO) to maintain a safe and organized food service environment.
  • Complete cash handling, data entry, and administrative tasks as needed.
  • Demonstrate flexibility, organization, independent judgment, and teamwork in a fast-paced healthcare setting.
  • Participate in required training, health screenings, and other departmental responsibilities as assigned.

Qualifications

Required:

  • High School Diploma or GED equivalent

  • Basic computer knowledge

  • Food Handler Certification within 180 days of hire

Preferred:

  • Six months experience

Exception: New graduate internal employees seeking their first licensed clinical position at NM may be eligible depending upon the job family.
