About the Role:
The Underground Equipment Operator is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of heavy equipment used in underground utility and electrical construction projects. This position requires experience operating earth-moving equipment, including skid steers, excavators, and backhoes, while supporting the installation of underground utilities, conduit systems, and related infrastructure.
The ideal candidate has experience in underground construction, understands safe excavation practices, and possesses a strong working knowledge of reading and interpreting utility blueprints, construction drawings, and utility locates to ensure accurate installation and avoid damage to existing underground facilities. The Underground Equipment Operator works closely with field crews to complete projects safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications.
Minimum Qualifications:
- Valid heavy equipment operator certification or equivalent training.
- Minimum of 2 years experience operating underground heavy machinery in construction, mining, or utility sectors.
- Strong understanding of underground safety regulations and best practices.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings and project plans.
- Physical ability to work in confined spaces and challenging underground environments.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Experience with specific underground equipment models used in the company’s operations.
- Additional certifications in safety training such as OSHA or MSHA.
- Basic mechanical skills for troubleshooting and minor repairs.
- Experience working in diverse underground environments including tunnels, mines, or utility vaults.
- Familiarity with computerized equipment controls and monitoring systems.
- Proven ability to operate skid steers, excavators, backhoes, and similar earth-moving equipment.
Responsibilities:
- Operate various types of underground heavy equipment including loaders, drills, and excavators to perform excavation, material transport, and site preparation tasks.
- Conduct pre-operation inspections and routine maintenance checks to ensure equipment is in safe working condition.
- Follow all safety protocols and regulatory requirements to maintain a secure working environment for all personnel on site.
- Coordinate with team members and supervisors to execute project plans and adjust operations as needed based on site conditions.
- Document equipment usage, maintenance activities, and any incidents or irregularities encountered during operation.

The Underground Equipment Operator utilizes technical skills daily to operate complex machinery safely and efficiently within confined underground spaces. Strong mechanical aptitude allows the operator to perform routine maintenance and quickly identify equipment issues to prevent downtime. Effective communication skills are essential for coordinating with team members and ensuring adherence to safety protocols. The ability to interpret technical drawings and project plans guides precise equipment operation aligned with project goals. Additionally, problem-solving skills enable the operator to adapt to changing site conditions and maintain productivity under challenging circumstances.
