Your Role

As the Technician Mechanical, you will support the Truck Shop team within Mobile Fleet Maintenance by carrying out high-quality mechanical maintenance, inspections and repairs on mobile fleet equipment.

You will play an important role in supporting safe, reliable and productive fleet performance by completing scheduled work, assisting with breakdown repairs, supporting backlog tasks and working closely with the Planning Team, Leading Hand and other stakeholders. This role is suited to an experienced heavy diesel fitter or mechanical technician with strong haul truck experience, good fault-finding capability and a practical focus on safety, reliability and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Carry out mechanical maintenance, inspections, fault finding and repairs on mobile fleet equipment in line with planned schedules and Newmont standards.
  • Support safe and reliable operation of haul trucks and workshop equipment through quality maintenance practices.
  • Assist with breakdown repairs in the pit, workshop and other operational areas as required.
  • Work with the Leading Hand, Planning Team and other stakeholders to complete scheduled maintenance and backlog work on time.
  • Use diagnostic systems, including Caterpillar ET or similar tools, to diagnose faults and support effective repairs.
  • Support preventative maintenance planning by identifying required work, component condition and upcoming service requirements.
  • Maintain a strong safety focus and comply with Newmont safety standards, Fatality Risk Management requirements, environmental requirements, policies and procedures.
  • Ensure incidents, hazards and risks are reported in a timely manner and contribute to safe work practices across the team.
  • Maintain quality workmanship across allocated tasks and actively contribute to problem solving and continuous improvement.
  • Support apprentices and less experienced team members through coaching, guidance and sharing practical trade knowledge.
  • Ensure rotatable components are cleaned, labelled and returned correctly to support core return and inventory processes.
  • Maintain mobile maintenance workflow systems, follow standard jobs and support efficient use of parts and consumables.

Your Skills & Experience
  • NATTB Trade Certificate in Heavy Diesel Fitting or equivalent mechanical trade qualification.
  • 5–7 years’ experience in mining, mobile fleet maintenance, heavy equipment maintenance or a similar heavy industry environment.
  • Experience maintaining Caterpillar haul trucks, ideally including Cat 785D/C, 777F, 773B series or similar equipment.
  • Strong understanding of haul truck system operation, diagnostics, maintenance and repair practices.
  • Experience using Caterpillar ET or similar diagnostic systems for heavy machinery fault finding.
  • Experience attending breakdowns in the pit, workshop or other field environments.
  • Ability to understand planned maintenance requirements, service intervals and work scoping to support timely execution.
  • Practical understanding of component rebuilds, component change-outs and heavy machinery systems.
  • PNG Driver’s Licence Class 6 and Class 3.
  • Basic computer skills, including the ability to work with maintenance systems and complete records accurately.
  • Strong safety awareness and the ability to make decisions with consideration for safety, productivity, equipment reliability and cost.
  • Ability to work independently when assigned tasks, while also contributing positively to a team environment.


Desirable experience includes previous operation of heavy machinery, forklift, IT loader, telehandler, overhead crane, rigging and dogging experience, basic welding and oxy cutting knowledge, basic auto electrical knowledge, and experience coaching or mentoring apprentices in a workshop or field maintenance environment.

Work Environment & Benefits

This FIFO 28:14 day night role is based at Lihir Gold Limited in Papua New Guinea, supporting the Mobile Fleet Maintenance team within the Truck Shop. You will work in a hands-on maintenance environment supporting critical mobile fleet assets that are essential to safe and productive mining operations.

You will work closely with the Supervisor – Truck Shop, Leading Hand, Planning Team, maintenance crews and other operational stakeholders to support fleet reliability, complete planned work and respond to breakdown requirements.
