Newmont Suriname was established in 2004 as an entity of Newmont Mining Corporation and is headquartered in Paramaribo, Suriname. The Merian Project is located approximately 60 km south of Moengo in a largely undeveloped part of the country with the nearest permanent settlement, Langa Tabiki, approximately 17 km east from the Project site. Purpose

The purpose of this internship is to develop foundational knowledge and practical skills in geotechnical engineering according to the learning objectives in the internship plan.

Essential Duties
  • Assist with the preparation of weekly geotechnical reports, ensuring accuracy and completeness of data inputs.
  • Support bench reconciliation activities by comparing design versus actual excavation outcomes.
  • Participate in slope monitoring data review to identify trends or anomalies under guidance.
  • Assist in basic interpretation of piezometric and geotechnical datasets to support team analysis.
  • Maintain organized records of geotechnical data and ensure proper documentation standards are followed.
  • Contribute to the monitoring and reporting processes that ensure slope stability and operational safety.
  • Support the identification and escalation of potential geotechnical risks through data review (under supervision).
  • Apply fundamental understanding of rock mechanics and slope stability principles to promote safe practices.
  • Adhere to all site safety requirements, environmental standards, and geotechnical procedures.
Training & Experience

Knowledge:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Mineral Geosciences and Mining or a related discipline at Anton De Kom Universiteit van Suriname
  • Preferably in 2nd year or above (or equivalent stage of study)
  • Demonstrated coursework or academic exposure to rock mechanics, soil mechanics, or geotechnical engineering fundamentals is advantageous
  • Strong academic performance in mathematics, engineering analysis, and technical subjects

Technical skills:

  • Ability to analyze and interpret datasets with guidance
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for basic analysis, and reporting
  • Exposure to or willingness to learn geotechnical software tools
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail
  • Ability to compile and present technical information clearly in reports
  • Basic numerical and statistical reasoning skills
  • Good written and verbal communication skills for technical contexts
  • Ability to manage data systematically and maintain accurate documentation
