Newmont Suriname was established in 2004 as an entity of Newmont Mining Corporation and is headquartered in Paramaribo, Suriname. Located in South America, Suriname was originally settled as a Dutch colony, is very culturally diverse and enjoys a tropical climate. The Merian Project is located approximately 60 km south of Moengo in a largely undeveloped part of the country with the nearest permanent settlement, Langa Tabiki, approximately 17 km east from the Project site. Strong support from host communities and the government of Suriname strengthen Merian's ability to deliver safe, profitable production with significant upside potential and opportunity for employees, host communities and shareholders.

Purpose

The purpose of this internship is to develop foundational knowledge and practical skills in mine geology according to the learning objectives in the internship plan.

Essential Duties
  • Assist with ore control activities, including sampling and adherence to sampling protocols.
  • Support geological mapping activities by recording and interpreting lithological and structural information.
  • Assist in the generation and updating of ore polygons under guidance.
  • Contribute to reconciliation reporting by comparing planned versus actual ore performance.
  • Maintain accurate geological records and ensure proper data documentation and quality control.
  • Adhere to all safety procedures during fieldwork, sampling, and site inspections.
  • Support safe sampling and mapping practices in operational mining areas.
  • Recognize and escalate potential geological risks (e.g., ore dilution, misclassification) under supervision.
  • Apply responsible practices in data handling to support sustainable resource management.
Training & Experience

Knowledge:

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s degree in Geology or a related discipline at Anton De Kom Universiteit van Suriname
  • Preferably in 2nd year or above (or equivalent stage of study)
  • Coursework exposure to economic geology, mineralogy, or structural geology is advantageous
  • Strong academic performance in geoscience subjects, mathematics, and data analysis

Technical Skills:

  • Ability to collect, organize, and interpret geological and sampling data
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Excel for data analysis and reporting
  • Exposure to or willingness to learn geological and mine software
  • Basic skills in geological mapping and spatial data interpretation
  • Strong analytical and attention-to-detail skills
  • Ability to compile clear and structured reports
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to maintain accurate and reliable datasets
