This posting is for an Engineering Technician I position located in the Winston-Salem Construction 1 Unit. This position assists engineers and higher-level technicians in the implementation and administration of roadway and structure construction projects awarded to private contractors. Position is responsible for assistance on several projects categorized from minor to complex. Provides inspection of every phase of a construction project to ensure it is built according to plans and specifications in a timely and cost-effective manner. The selected applicant will conduct routine inspections for compliance with contract agreements, standard/codes, permit, and specifications. Daily duties will include calculations, computation, and computer/iPad data entry. This position must establish and maintain positive lines of communication between other technicians, engineers, contractors, and the public. Should be able to effectively communicate in a clear, concise, organized, and persuasive manner. Will be subjected to outside environment with exposure to hazards on construction sites including heights, highway traffic, and traversing rough terrain in evaluating highway construction. Must be able to perform moderate physical activity including but not limited to walking, climbing, balancing, kneeling, and standing. Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Must be able to work nights and weekends as required, to any assigned project within the Division. Must apply safety philosophy and program to all operations. POS# 60021020

Additional Expectations:

Safety-toed shoes required. Ability to legally operate a motor vehicle preferred.
Offer of employment will be contingent upon successful completion of NCDOT post offer employment evaluation.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities/Management Preferences

Salary Grade and Salary Range: NC07 $37,377.00 - $65,408.00

Management prefers applicants with the following:

  • Knowledge and skill in the use of computer equipment, iPad and software
  • Experience maintaining standard daily records and reports
  • Experience working in a team environment to complete assignments
  • Experience in customer service related to resolving problems that involves explaining complicated engineering concepts to various customer groups
  • Experience planning, developing, scheduling, tracking, and completing projects independently or with limited supervision

Minimum Education and Experience

Associate's degree in Civil Engineering Technology, Survey Technology or assigned discipline from an appropriately accredited institution; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Salary for a trainee may be set at a lower level than the classification salary range and recruitment range that is listed in the posting with the salary being adjusted up accordingly when the trainee has obtained the necessary additional education to fully meet the minimum qualifications as outlined in the classification specification.
