Human and Organisational Performance Manager

About this role

About the role

Join us and help shape the human performance behind Britain's energy future.

At National Grid Strategic Infrastructure, we're transforming how safety, learning and performance are embedded across some of the UK's most ambitious energy infrastructure projects.

Through The Great Grid Upgrade, we're connecting more home-grown renewable energy, strengthening energy security and helping build a cleaner future for generations to come.

Success on this scale isn't driven by systems and processes alone. It's driven by people.

We're looking for a Human and Organisational Performance (HOP) Manager to help shape the Safety, Health, Environment and Sustainability culture behind this transformation. You'll influence senior leaders, strengthen organisational capability and champion modern Human and Organisational Performance thinking across nationally significant infrastructure programmes.

This is an opportunity to create meaningful cultural change, helping thousands of people work safely, learn continuously and perform at their best in complex, high-risk environments.

If you're passionate about Human Factors, organisational learning and creating the conditions for people to succeed, we'd love to hear from you.

This role offers hybrid working, with travel across the UK to collaborate with teams and visit project sites.

What you'll be doing

As our Human and Organisational Performance Manager, you'll lead the development and implementation of strategies that strengthen organisational performance, improve Safety, Health, Environmental and Sustainability outcomes, and foster a learning culture across Strategic Infrastructure.

You'll:

  • Lead the implementation of HOP principles across major infrastructure programmes
  • Champion modern HOP thinking, helping teams understand the difference between work as imagined and work as done
  • Facilitate learning experiences that unlock insight, encourage collaboration and improve performance
  • Apply Human Factors principles to strengthen decision-making, organisational effectiveness and operational outcomes
  • Coach, challenge and influence leaders to create environments where people can thrive
  • Design and deliver engaging workshops, learning teams, leadership programmes and improvement initiatives
  • Support teams to learn from incidents, operational experience, near misses and everyday work
  • Partner with project teams, contractors and stakeholders to embed HOP principles throughout the project lifecycle
  • Develop meaningful performance measures that support continuous improvement and organisational learning
  • Conduct assurance activities and identify opportunities to improve systems, processes and ways of working

What we're looking for

We're looking for someone who can influence thinking, build trust and drive meaningful cultural change.

You'll bring:

  • Experience implementing Human and Organisational Performance, Human Factors or organisational learning approaches within complex operational environments
  • Strong understanding of HOP methodologies, Human Factors principles, Safety-II and Safety Differently
  • Experience improving organisational performance through learning, engagement and capability development, rather than solely compliance-led approaches
  • A proven ability to coach, influence and challenge leaders at all levels
  • Experience designing and facilitating workshops, learning interventions and leadership programmes
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and facilitation skills, with the ability to build credibility across diverse teams
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, translating insight into practical improvements
  • A genuine passion for helping people and organisations perform at their best

Desirable:

  • Degree in Human Factors, Organisational Psychology, Industrial Engineering or a related discipline
  • Professional Human & Organisational Performance certifications
  • Experience supporting major capital programmes, construction environments or large infrastructure projects

Why join us?

This is a rare opportunity to influence the Safety, Health, Environment & Sustainability culture behind some of Britain's most ambitious infrastructure investments.

You'll work at the intersection of leadership, Human Factors, organisational learning and performance improvement, helping shape how thousands of people work, learn and succeed across Strategic Infrastructure.

The impact of your work won't be confined to a single project or team. You'll help build the capability, culture and performance needed to deliver critical infrastructure that will power the UK's future for generations to come.

If you're looking for a role where you can influence leaders, challenge conventional thinking and leave a lasting legacy across nationally significant projects, this is it.

What you'll get

  • A competitive salary between £60,000 - £75,000 – dependent on capability.
  • An annual performance bonus of up to 30% of your eligible earnings in the performance year.
  • 28 days annual leave plus eight statutory days.
  • The option to buy additional or sell holiday days.
  • A generous contributory pension scheme - we will double-match your contribution to a maximum company contribution of 12%.
  • Financial support to help cover the cost of professional membership subscriptions, course fees, books, exam fees and time off for study leave - so long as it's relevant to your role.
  • Access to flexible benefits such as a share incentive plan, salary sacrifice car and technology schemes, support via employee assistance lines and matched charity giving to name a few.
  • Family care benefits including a back-up care service for when your usual care arrangements fall through (six paid days each year as standard with the option to purchase further days).
  • Access to apps that support health, fitness and wellbeing.
