About this role

Canadian Islamic College (CIC) is a fully accredited private college offering an Honours BA in Islamic Studies, approved by the Ontario Ministry of Colleges and Universities, with its inaugural cohort launched in Fall 2025. CIC promotes academic excellence and critical inquiry within an Islamic framework in Canada’s pluralistic context. Its undergraduate program includes specializations in Islamic Jurisprudence and Chaplaincy, Islamic Economics and Finance, Islamic Social and Environmental Justice, Islamic Arts and Media, and Arabic Studies.

Canadian Islamic College (CIC) is seeking a qualified Sessional Instructor to teach IJC 306 – Introduction to Islamic Jurisprudence in the Winter 2027 semester as part of our Honours BA in Islamic Studies program.

Course Overview

IJC 306 provides a foundational introduction to Islamic jurisprudence (Al-Fiqh al-Islami), examining its core principles, historical development, and methodological foundations.

Students will engage with:

  • Foundational concepts of Islamic law (Fiqh and Usulal-Fiqh)
  • The development of the major legal schools (madhahib)
  • Scriptural sources of Islamic law (Qur’an and Sunnah)
  • Comparative approaches to legal reasoning
  • Applications of Islamic law in modern contexts
  • Contemporary issues including human rights, governance, and Muslim minorities in Western societies

The course also situates Islamic jurisprudence within broader legal and intellectual traditions, enabling students to critically engage with both classical and modern legal thought.


Responsibilities

  • Deliver undergraduate lectures and seminars (in English)
  • Develop and update course syllabus and assessments
  • Facilitate interactive discussions and applied learning activities
  • Evaluate assignments, exams, and student presentations
  • Provide academic mentorship and feedback
  • Support student engagement and learning outcomes

Qualifications

  • PhD (preferred) in Islamic Studies, Islamic Law, or related discipline. Applicants with a master’s degree will be considered.
  • Minimum 3 years of university-level teaching experience
  • Strong grounding in Islamic jurisprudence and legal theory
  • Ability to teach complex material in a clear, structured manner in English
  • Commitment to CIC’s academic mission and interdisciplinary framework
  • Strong communication, mentorship, and curriculum development skills
