Job Summary

The Controller is responsible for overseeing the company's accounting operations and ensuring the accuracy, integrity, and timeliness of financial reporting for a group of 50+ entities and 80+ employees. This role manages a team of two-to-three (one part-time team member), distributing and overseeing daily accounting tasks, while reporting directly to the VP of Finance on financial performance, reporting, and strategic initiatives. The Controller oversees payroll processes — including payroll tax compliance — and loan compliance, and is expected to bring a modern, efficient approach to accounting operations, including the use of AI tools to build and improve systems and processes.

Duties & Responsibilities

Oversee day-to-day accounting operations, including general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and month-end close

Manage, mentor, and delegate tasks to a team of accountants (2-3)

Review and approve journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statements

Prepare and present accurate monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports to the VP of Finance

Oversee payroll auditing, approval, billing, and accounting, including payroll tax compliance, to ensure accuracy and timely payment to employees

Monitor and ensure compliance with loan covenants and requirements

Ensure compliance with GAAP, tax regulations, and internal financial policies

Support budgeting and forecasting processes in partnership with the VP of Finance

Maintain and strengthen internal controls to safeguard company assets

Coordinate with external auditors, tax preparers, and other outside financial partners

Identify and implement opportunities to improve accounting processes and systems, including the use of AI tools to build more efficient workflows

Manage a variety of projects across accounting, reporting, and process improvement as requested by the VP of Finance

Required & Preferred Skills

Strong knowledge of accounting principles (GAAP) and financial reporting

Proven ability to manage and develop a small accounting team

Experience with payroll processes, including payroll tax compliance

Experience with loan compliance and covenant reporting

Proficient in Microsoft Excel

Comfortable using AI tools and building systems/processes with AI

Strong analytical and problem-solving skills

High attention to detail and accuracy

Excellent organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize, delegate, and manage a variety of projects at once

Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to present financial information clearly to leadership

Ability to maintain confidentiality and exercise sound judgment

Fund or investment accounting experience preferred

Education & Experience

Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field required

CPA and/or Master’s degree preferred

7+ years of progressive accounting experience preferred, including prior supervisory or team lead experience

Real estate or property management industry experience preferred (Entrata software)

Experience with payroll systems and payroll tax compliance preferred
