Staff Software Engineer (Platform Team)

About this role
As a Staff Software Engineer on Motion's Platform team, you’ll design, implement, and maintain robust backend APIs and services that power Motion’s core operations and let teams leverage data across multiple product lines. You’ll work with a stack including Node.js with Express, TypeScript, GraphQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, React, and Azure to build scalable systems. Motion is fully remote with hub offices in Toronto, Montreal, and Porto, and seeks someone who can overlap with ET hours.
What youll do
- Scoping, designing, and implementing resilient, performant backend solutions.
- Working closely with fellow engineers to deliver complex backend features and integrations.
- Maintaining and enhancing existing integrations, anticipating future product solutions and ensuring scalability.
- Identifying and resolving errors, performance issues, and devex problems in our codebase.
- Driving engineering advancements.
What Motion is looking for
- 6+ years of backend engineering experience building and maintaining large-scale software applications.
- Proficiency with Node.js and TypeScript; familiarity with React, GraphQL, PostgreSQL, MongoDB, and Azure is a plus.
- Strong experience with asynchronous message queue systems.
- Experience with MongoDB or other document-based databases; solid data modeling, ETL concepts, and simplifying data architecture.
- Experience designing and implementing database schemas and data models, evolving from v1 to production use.
- Experience implementing OpenAI SDK or similar AI/ML services into a product workflow.
- Direct client- or non-technical stakeholder-facing experience.
- Founder or Founding Engineer experience.
- Interest in AI/ML and ability to thrive in a fast-paced environment.
