Heavy Equipment Operator
Position Overview
The Heavy Equipment Operator is responsible for safely and efficiently operating heavy machinery to support excavation and underground utility installation. This role requires strong technical skill, attention to safety, and the ability to follow grade markings, hand signals, and project specifications.
Responsibilities:
- Work effectively as part of a crew to support project objectives.
- Operate or tend machinery equipped with buckets to excavate and load loose materials.
- Operate construction equipment such as power shovels, trenchers, and bulldozers.
- Operate heavy equipment safely and in full compliance with company safety policies and procedures.
- Perform daily equipment inspections before and after operation.
- Clean cab, tracks, and windshield daily; grease and check fluids regularly.
- Maintain proper slope, benching, and spoil pile placement per OSHA standards, including correct use of trench boxes and safety systems.
- Excavate responsibly around existing utilities and enforce hand-digging when working in proximity.
- Apply proper rigging techniques when lifting or moving materials.
- Immediately report any equipment damage to the Supervisor.
- Attend required Operator Certification Training.
- Follow hand signals, grade stakes, and other markings to ensure work is performed to specifications.
- Assist with all manual labor tasks as directed by the Crew Leader, Foreman, or Supervisor.
- Perform physically demanding construction duties.
- Assist crew members with installing underground pipes and conduits, performing shovel and trench work, and operating power tools.
- Comply with all OSHA and company safety policies and guidelines, including use of stop-work authority when necessary.
- Support and promote a positive safety culture.
- Perform other related duties as assigned.
Qualifications:
- Ability to listen to, understand, and follow directions accurately.
- Flexibility to adapt as assignments or priorities change.
- Ability to work effectively with a variety of personalities and team members.
- Basic arithmetic skills for counting, measuring, and inventory tasks.
- Capacity to remain efficient and adaptable in a fast-paced environment.
- Ability to make sound, timely decisions under pressure and during unexpected situations or delays.
- Strong multitasking skills, with the ability to analyze issues and solve problems effectively.
- Must be able to work in all weather conditions, including extreme heat and cold.
