Tank Line Chemistry Technician

Onsite in Auburn, Washington or Portland, Oregon

 Pay Estimate: $30 - $48 per hour

The Tank Line Chemistry Technician will perform routine and specialized chemical testing, sampling, tracking, and day-to-day maintenance of tank lines, storage tanks, fluid treatment systems, and lab instrumentation. The role supports quality control and production by ensuring fluids (coatings, solvents, process chemistries, primers, paints, adhesives, sealants, cleaning solutions) meet specifications and that tank systems operate safely and reliably.


 

Responsibilities:

  • Collect representative samples from tank lines, storage tanks, mixing vessels, and production process points in accordance with established sampling plans and safety procedures
  • Perform routine laboratory and field testing including: Specific gravity, Viscosity, Solids content, pH, Percent volatiles, Flash point, Density, Conductivity, FTIR analysis, Titrations, Refractometry, Wet chemistry procedures
  • Operate, calibrate, troubleshoot, and maintain laboratory instruments and tank line equipment including viscometers, density meters, pH meters, pipettes, analytical balances, FTIR/IR spectrometers, temperature sensors, pumps, filters, and dispensing systems
  • Monitor tank levels, fluid inventories, batching operations, and material transfers while maintaining accurate records within LIMS, ERP, or inventory management systems
  • Prepare and mix laboratory batches, formulations, and chemical dilutions according to engineering specifications, recipes, and work instructions
  • Conduct visual and basic microscopic inspections to identify contamination, phase separation, particulates, and color or appearance variations
  • Maintain complete chain-of-custody documentation, laboratory records, and quality control data; generate routine QC reports and enter results into LIMS or PLM systems
  • Support disposition of off-specification materials through quarantine, blending, rework, dilution, or disposal following established procedures and regulatory requirements
  • Perform preventive maintenance on tank line equipment including pumps, valves, filters, seals, and sensors; identify and report maintenance or repair needs
  • Follow all Environmental Health & Safety (EHS), hazardous material handling, PPE, spill response, SDS, and waste management procedures
  • Support root cause investigations by providing laboratory data, sampling results, and field observations to engineering and quality teams

 

Qualifications:

  • U.S. Citizenship is Required
  • Associate degree in Chemistry or a related discipline and 1-3+ years of experience of related laboratory, manufacturing, or industrial chemical operations experience
  • Typically 1–3 years of experience supporting Chemical handling, coatings/fluids operations, industrial chemistry, paint/tank line operations, or lab support roles
  • Experience performing routine laboratory testing, sample collection, titrations, and safe chemical handling procedures
  • Proficiency using quality control laboratory equipment including: Viscometer, pH meter, Density meter, Refractometer, Glossmeter (where applicable)
  • Experience following Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs), laboratory work instructions, sampling procedures, and formulation recipes
  • Basic proficiency with Microsoft Excel, LIMS, ERP, or laboratory data management systems
  • Knowledge of preventive maintenance practices and troubleshooting of pumps, valves, filters, and related process equipment

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience supporting aerospace, defense, automotive, industrial coatings, paint manufacturing, or chemical processing operations
  • Experience with coatings, primers, adhesives, sealants, solvents, and industrial process chemistries
  • Experience using FTIR spectroscopy, laboratory instrumentation calibration, and quality control reporting systems
  • Familiarity with environmental compliance, hazardous waste handling, OSHA regulations, and chemical inventory management
