Job Description
STEM at Augsburg University has a large physical footprint with teaching and research labs split between the basement and four floors of the Hagfors Center. The Student Lab Safety Technician (SLST) will help ensure all labs meet the OSHA standards have the necessary safety tests, first aid supplies as well as meeting the monthly visual safety checks to maintain safe lab work environments. The SLST will be trained and required to weekly visit and document the lab safety equipment in all STEM. The SLST will report to and work directly with the Biology Lab Manager, Chris Palahniuk and the Chemistry Stock Room Tech, Isaiah Ripley.
School of Natural Sciences Laboratory Work Includes:
- Monthly safety checks and documentation of School of Natural Sciences laboratory safety equipment including eyewash stations, safety showers
- Monthly School of Natural Sciences laboratory checks for safety compliance, unsafe lab conditions and visual inspection of hazardous waste storage
- Monthly First Aid Box checks and documentation of contents
- Other duties may be assigned as we grow into this position, and in updated communication with the student hire'
Compensation & Benefits:
- $16.45/hr
- Minnesota Sick and Safe Time
- Minnesota Paid Family and Medical Leave
- Not eligible for health insurance benefits
Qualifications
- Currently enrolled as a student at Augsburg University and be work-study eligible
- School of Natural Sciences majors with STEM lab experience (like any or all of CHM115, BIO151 or PHY107/PHY121) are preferred.
- At least one year of School of Natural Sciences course work preferred
- Excellent oral communication and oservational skills
- Good written communication skills
- Ability to work independently and reliable
- Some understanding of lab safety standards helpful
- Other safety experience preferred
- Comprehensive laboratory safety training and lab orientation will be supplied including OSHA standards for Lab Safety.
- Basic duties will include lifting light loads, activating water showers and supporting a large shower tester above your head, pushing a cart and privileged access to sensitive lab areas.
Schedule
- 5 hours per week, flexible, but preference towards weekly shift work - from August to May
