Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
• Ensure on-time delivery of meals to home-bound participants following Meals on Wheels People standards.
• Schedule volunteer drivers daily and maintain accurate route books.
• Follow up with participants if a driver is unable to deliver a meal.
• Manage participant care, including reassessments, change tracking, and record maintenance.
• Assist Site Manager in responsive hunger relief services, including supplemental meals, partnerships, contracts, ethnic meals, and programming for isolation.
• Aid in screening, registration, and training of volunteers.
• Maintain and update client and volunteer information in data management systems.
• Complete assigned administrative tasks.
• Support Meals on Wheels People events and fundraising initiatives.
• Participate in in-service training and required meetings.
• Uphold mission, vision, values, and strategic plan of Meals on Wheels People, Inc.
• Perform other assigned duties.
The On-Call Cook is responsible for food preparation and cleaning tasks that keep the kitchen running smoothly. They will work alongside the BOH staff in preparing food ingredients, cooking meals, menu development, and coordination of meal service so that excellence, quality, temperature, and appearance of food meet our high standards. The Line Cook will help ensure that staff has a clean and well-stocked kitchen in which to operate.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions)
Prepare ingredients for service and menu development (chopping and peeling vegetables, cutting meats, etc.)
Cooks menu items and cooperates with kitchen staff
Ensures excellent presentation of dishes
Ensure compliance with sanitation and safety regulations
Correctly prepare all food following standard and unique recipes
Store food safely and adequately and stock inventory appropriately
Set up and break down workstation with all necessary supplies
Report necessary equipment repair and maintenance to Kitchen Manager
Maintains a positive and professional approach with coworkers and customers
Support the mission, goals, and objectives of Meals on Wheels People, Inc.
Other duties as assigned
QualificationsEducation & Knowledge
High School Diploma or Equivalent required; Associate Degree or certification in Culinary Arts preferred
Knowledge of various cooking procedures and methods
Current Food Handler’s card or ability to obtain one upon hire
Current ServSafe certification or ability to obtain certification within 18 months of hire
Strong knowledge of local, state and federal food sanitation standards
Skills, Abilities & Experience
Minimum one-year experience in food service cooking position
Ability to work in a fast-paced, team environment
Proven customer service skills
Experience working with diverse populations, including aging, minority and low-income populations
Good verbal and written communication skills
Proven recordkeeping and organizational skills
Ability to lift a minimum of 50 lbs and 20-30lbs repetitively
Passion for serving seniors in our community
Language proficiency in English/Spanish, Vietnamese, Russian, Asian, or African languages is highly valued. Successfully passing a fluency exam in any of these languages qualifies candidates for an extra $1 per hour pay rate.
Working Conditions/Physical Demands
Fast paced kitchen environment, with significant people interaction. Ability to lift a minimum of 50lbs and 20-30lbs repetitively. Frequent reaching, bending, stooping and grasping. Frequent use of knives and cooking utensils, stove, oven and other kitchen equipment. Must pass drug screen and criminal background check.
At Will Employment
Meals on Wheels People is an “employment at will” organization, which means either the employee or Meals on Wheels People may terminate the employment relationship at any time for any reason and with or without notice. No supervisor or managerial person has the authority to alter this relationship other than the Executive Director, and any such change must be in writing.

You will be eligible to participate in the benefit programs available to our employees as soon as you meet the eligibility requirement of each plan.
Employees scheduled to work 30hrs or more per week become eligible for Medical, Dental and 401(k) the first of the month following 60 days of employment.
Paid time off accruals will be pro-rated based on your date of hire. You will be eligible to begin using paid time off after you’ve completed your introductory period, which is 90 days from your date of hire

HOW WE'VE GROWN
Meals on Wheels People produces 5,000 nutritious meals every weekday in a 14,000-square-foot commercial kitchen in the heart of Multnomah Village. Meals are delivered to dozens of dining centers throughout Multnomah, Washington and Clark counties where they are served at noon to older adults in the dining rooms or sent out as Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors.
VOLUNTEERS MAKE IT HAPPEN
Volunteers are the heart and soul of Meals on Wheels People and we depend on more than 400 people every day to help prepare and deliver meals. The volunteer with a friendly smile and nutritious meal is often the only person some of our homebound seniors will see on an average day.
MAKING MEALS AVAILABLE
Meals on Wheels People meals are available to anyone over the age of 60. Each meal costs $10.50 and seniors are encouraged to donate what they can afford. Weekend and Holiday meals are provided to those who have no other source of food or support.
