Water Truck Foreman

Colorado Springs · On-site$30 – $45

About this role

JOB SUMMARY

The Truck Driver-Lead Person is a critical frontline leadership role responsible for the safe and efficient transportation of paving materials (asphalt, road base, millings) and heavy equipment to and from project sites.

Beyond standard driving duties, the Lead Person serves as the primary coordinator for the trucking flow on-site, acting as a liaison between the Paving Foreman and the transport team. This individual ensures that material delivery is timed perfectly with the paver’s speed to maintain a continuous 'mat' and oversee the daily safety and maintenance of the fleet. The Lead Person also mentors less experienced drivers and may be required to operate paving equipment or perform manual labor to support the crew's success.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Coordinate the arrival, staging, and departure of all haul trucks to ensure a steady supply of material to the paver without causing traffic congestion or 'paver stops.'
  • Coordinate with the Foreman to ensure the continuous flow of Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) or other materials to the paver, minimizing downtime.
  • Assist in the onboarding of new drivers, ensuring they understand Martin Marietta’s safety standards and specific paving site logistics.
  • Function as the first point of contact for driver-related issues or delays on-site, escalating to the Foreman when necessary.
  • Operate heavy-duty trucks to transport asphalt, aggregates, and equipment to and from various job sites.
  • Ensure all loads are properly secured, tarped, and within legal weight limits to prevent spills or DOT violations.
  • Expertly maneuver trucks in tight work zones, backing into pavers or material transfer vehicles (MTVs) with precision.
  • Conduct thorough daily inspections of vehicles and equipment (brakes, tires, fluids, lights) and document findings in accordance with DOT and company policy.
  • Identify and report mechanical issues immediately to the shop; schedule routine maintenance for the fleet to prevent operational delays.
  • Maintain accurate electronic or paper logs, trip reports, and fuel receipts in strict adherence to Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations.
  • Lead daily safety meetings for the driving crew; identify and mitigate hazards such as overhead power lines, unstable ground, or high-traffic areas.
  • Immediately report any accidents, near-misses, or property damage, assisting in the subsequent investigation and documentation process.
  • Ensure trucks are kept clean of asphalt buildup using approved release agents, protecting both the equipment and the quality of the material delivered.
