JOB SUMMARY

The Quality Tech. supports the California Market by performing entry‑level quality control testing, inspection, and documentation for aggregate and Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) materials. The role ensures that production and placement activities comply with ASTM, AASHTO, CDOT, and Martin Marietta quality standards.

This position works closely with Plant Operations, Dispatch, Project Management, and the Division Lab to monitor material consistency, support daily testing, and help maintain strong customer relationships. The Quality Tech. plays a key role in identifying potential quality issues, supporting environmental stewardship, and ensuring that safety remains the top priority across all tasks.

KEY DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Follow all Martin Marietta safety policies and procedures; ensure every task is executed with safety as the first priority.
  • Support environmental compliance by maintaining clean work areas, proper material handling, and adherence to environmental standards.
  • Perform routine testing of aggregates and HMA according to ASTM, AASHTO, CDOT, and internal standards. Tests may include gradation, moisture content, density, temperature, and asphalt binder content.
  • Work with plant operations to monitor aggregate moisture, cleanliness, and uniformity to ensure materials meet production quality targets.
  • Assist with sampling raw materials and support Division Lab schedules for routine and project‑specific testing.
  • Participate in testing and evaluation of new raw material sources under supervision; report any suspect results immediately.
  • Interact professionally with customers at job sites; provide basic guidance on HMA placement and compaction techniques as needed.
  • Conduct on‑site testing and observations to verify that delivered materials meet specifications and support resolution of quality concerns.
  • Maintain accurate logs of all testing performed at the lab, plant, and job sites, including observations and test results.
  • Communicate daily HMA testing results to plant operations, project teams, and management.
  • Work closely with operations, dispatch, estimators, and project management to support quality objectives.
  • Assist in implementing quality‑related best practices for production, delivery, and placement of materials.
  • Participate in occasional lab work for training, mix design support, and special projects.

QUALIFICATIONS

Education

High school diploma, GED, or relevant experience

CAPA Levels A & B certification is required

Radiation Safety Training Certificate

Work Experience

No prior work experience required; 6 months – 1 year in Quality Control Testing within HMA or Aggregates is preferred.

Physical Requirements

Must be able to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. for equipment servicing.

Required to bend, stoop, climb, and reach. You must be able to maintain three points of contact when climbing on/off machinery or on ladders.

You must have good depth perception with or without seeing aid for distances up to 150 feet.

Working Conditions

All duties require outside assignments and require periods of work in all weather conditions, cold, wet, dry and dusty. Must be able to work in areas where noise levels are up to 85 dbs.

The hiring range for this position is $25.00 -$33.00 exclusive of benefits or bonuses (discretionary and non-discretionary). The offered base compensation will be determined based on factors such as geographic location, business need, market conditions, proficiencies, skills, education, and experience. Additionally, at Martin Marietta we place a high value on internal pay equity and will consider the compensation for those in similarly situated roles and direct team members. The hiring range for this role represents the base compensation we expect to pay for the position at time of hire and does not represent the total possible base pay of the position.
