The Opportunity:

The primary focus of this role will be to contribute to the profitable growth and retention of an assigned Management Liability portfolio through underwriting and managing products and services of complex risks. This position requires an individual to have the capability to obtain specialized knowledge of underwriting concepts, practices, procedures and techniques to include coverage issues, product lines, relevant systems, and competition in the marketplace.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Profitably grow portfolio by generating new business growth above targets.
  • Profitably underwrite and retain assigned Management Liability portfolio of complex accounts (Public/Private Directors & Officers (D&O), Employment Practices Liability (EPL), Fiduciary and Crime.
  • Work closely with team members, management, and Product Leaders in Management Liability to ensure consistency with underwriting protocols & product strategies.
  • Provide mentorship to Associate Underwriters and Underwriters including being a key referral point for the team.
  • Demonstrate effective prioritization of workload and provide superior customer service.
  • Drive innovation to improve the efficiency of the Management Liability renewal process and ease of doing business with our clients.
  • Review and negotiate policy terms and conditions including manuscript wording.
  • Lead account rounding efforts through upselling additional lines of coverage to renewal business.
  • Ensure proper organization and documentation of each underwriting file.
  • Perform related duties as requested to include report preparation, presentations, and special projects to assist in ensuring the success of the product line unit.

Skills & Qualifications:

  • A minimum of 3 years' experience underwriting Management Liability lines, with demonstrated expertise across D&O, EPL, Fiduciary and Crime.
  • Post-secondary education including relevant Insurance designation(s)/education is considered an asset.
  • Advanced knowledge of underwriting concepts, practices, and procedures within the Management Liability industry, including complex account structures.
  • Proven ability to profitably grow and retain a portfolio of Management Liability business.
  • Self-starter with proven analytical skills and a proven track record in a solutions-oriented approach to underwriting that drives profitable growth.
  • Comfortable with critical thinking and a growth mindset, with thoughtful consideration of diverse perspectives during decision-making and respectful of differences.
  • Able to respectfully give and receive positive and constructive feedback.
  • Effective at managing internal and external meetings with professionalism and clarity while driving mutual accountability for results.
  • Effective at change management and adapting to new systems and processes.
  • Helps drive innovation through a growth mindset, viewing roadblocks as opportunities for growth and supporting new idea testing, training, and ongoing monitoring of changes.
  • Excellent communication, organizational, and time management skills.
  • Strong negotiation skills, particularly with respect to policy terms, conditions, and manuscript wording.
  • Collaborates well across business units.

Target Hiring Range:

CAD $99,000 – $130,000 per year (base salary).

This range represents the expected annual base salary for this role. Final offers will be determined based on each candidate’s qualifications, relevant experience, internal equity, and the needs of the role. The posted range does not include variable compensation (bonus), allowances, or benefits. We encourage all qualified candidates to apply. Offers above the published maximum may be approved with appropriate business authorization.
